Harrison Returns

WBO Featherweight champ Scott Harrison returns to the ring 29th Oct at Glasgow Braehead Arena. He was originally scheduled to fight in September but got struck down with food poisoning whilst on Holiday.

At this moment in time he is due to fight my personal favourite, the always available T.B.A.

Any opinions as to who his next opponent should be?

I think he needs a big name fight soon in order to turn round the recent decline in ticket sales.

Are there any boxing clubs in town? The only place i can seem to find through the net and word of mouth is the bulldog gym but that seems more martial arts than boxing.

Need to get fit big time, haven't done anything healthy since moving down here. The only exercise Im getting is lifting cheap-ass pints from the Moon and Square :-?

Exactly the kind of big name fight that i was talking about  As this is a voluntary defence his management need to be looking at better options than this.

Will be lucky if the arena is 1/3 full for this.

I don't have a problem with Harrison fighting a "non-name". Be fair, he's had his share of them in McCullough and Medina and his last mandatory Abelyan was supposed to be dangerous. A voluntary defence against somebody like this is okay by me. I'm sure Warren would rather 3/4 fill the arena another 6 times than risk Harrison losing the belt to a high flyer in a voluntary in front of a full house.

To be fair, of the high profile SN fighters, Harrison has been matched the toughest of late, nothing wrong with a soft defence. He's certainly had it harder than Calzaghe or Hatton have in his last 3 fights.

totally concur, I though bout this when i did the top 20 thingy, deservedly he slotted in above JC and RH due to the fact he had taken on a real threat in Abeylan and despatched him in such impressive fashion.

It made me laugh when they brought over Manuel Medina for Harrison, three months after the Mexican had been absolutely massacred by Juan Manuel Marquez for the IBF title.
And Medina did him! It spoke volumes for the worth of the WBO.

Yes, but for my money Marquez is the best man in the division. He won that fight with Manny quite clearly for me, despite losing the first round 10-6. In a rematch he will win easily, and I won't be surprised if he stops Manny.

Harrison's next opponent will come from a list which includes Samuel Kebede (Ethiopia), Edel Ruiz (Mexico), Alvin Brown (United States), Miguel Malon (Spain) and Orlando Salido (Puerto Rico).

Boxrec ranks them 34, 132, 108, 49 (as a super bantamweight) and 11th (but lost 8 times) respectively

Alvin Brown? Is this serious? The guy was destroyed by Wayne McCoullough (and this was after all of Wayne's wars). I wanted an easy one for Scott, but if its Brown its taking things to extremes.

If they get Alvin Brown it will be an insult.

Wayne McCullough stopped him after three years out in his return fight.

For Harrison to fight him for the WBO title is ludicrous.

And they're waving the CHI and MAB carrots to hynotise and distract us.

David - I know, they must think we are stupid. Its the classic Sports Network trick of saying who the next but one fighter will be when they are fighting someone now not worthy of a title challenger.

I believe Harrison would fight MAB (and lose) and Chi (And possibly win, if he can keep him at range), but given the lack of serious negotations to bring those fights off, its laughable to describe the mas genuine potential fights for Harrison.

I thikn he will fight Chi next year .

I actually believe that talks have been going on for a fight next year between Harrison and Chi.

But i'd think Chi would win :TU:

A Harrison fight versus a marquee fighter does strike me as more plausible because big-names relative to the stage of Scott's career have been secured from Johnson to Patterson, Medina to Chacon.

But some of the names mentioned dont strike me as acceptable even for a voluntary defence?

Alvin Brown being the weakest, the Mexican guy mentioned I've not heard of before so I wont pass comment.

Generally speaking, Harrison has been matched pretty hard, especially earlier in his career, the Chacon fight was a good win at that stage.

Im not denying that Harrisons level of opposition is leagues above Hatton, Calzaghe etc but other than William Abelyan the so-called "name" fighters he has fought have all been past their best by a good few fights eg Patterson, Johnson, Robinson, McCullough, Medina but i do admit that Chacon, whilst limited was quite a dangerous match-up.

Having recognised names on your record doesnt do it for me if the names are shells of their former self.

To be honest his fights since Medina have not exactly been the hardest for him so having a good, live and well known opponent at this moment isnt asking too much from Scott physically as he is possibly at a point where he cant improve too much. Dont get me wrong Im not Dissing Harrison as he is one of my favourite fighters and Ive supported him for a good few years now - not been to any of his fights since McCullough though due to geography and work etc.

I honestly beleive he has the strength and resolve to give the best in the division a run for their money whilst making enough $$$ for him and his family to be very comfortable.

A fight with Chi would be a mouthwatering match-up with arguably the 2 strongest guys in this weight going head to head in a WBC/WBO unification. If Harrison won that, then having the WBC belt would mean a host of big fights on the horizon :TU: It would also raise his profile across the atlantic.

Hopefully 2005 will be his big year.

So Mini Frank says he's looking for a Harrison v Chi matchup next year.
Anyone else detect the strong aroma of bullshit in the air?

Why would safety first Sports Notwork throw their man in with a monster like Chi, when they can rack up multiple WBO defences against guys like Priest Smalls instead? It doesn't make sense.

Great fight for the fans, but it's one Scott could easily lose.
SN don't take 50/50 do they, we know that by now.

I train at Bulldog when i'm in Bournemouth it is more martial arts focused but they do boxing there.

Cheers, will look up the Winton club. Is the Bulldog any good? It looks quite impressive on the site so will probably check it out on my next day off.

cant see balido as an opponent. he is due to fight fellow Mexican Juan Manuel Márquez for the IBF and WBA belts in September so its a bit unlikely hed want to fight harrison in october
