Martin Gethin Announces Retirement

Martin Gethin took to social media on Saturday to announce his retirement from boxing.

The Walsall man, who earlier in the night had been stopped by Jack Catterall inside three rounds at Manchester Arena, issued a heartfelt apology before going on to reveal the news.

Gethin was outclassed by the undefeated Chorley man as he challenged him for the WBO Inter-Coninental super-lightweight title.

Gethin slipped to 28-9-1 (12 KOs).

“Sorry all,” the 33-year-old, who won the IBF International title with a knockout of John Wayne Hibbert last November, wrote on Facebook. “ just couldn't get going. think that's going to be the end of me.”

During a pro career which began back in November 2004, Gethin won eight titles –– including Midlands Area, British and English –– and even fought a final eliminator for the IBF world lightweight title back in 2013.

“Thank you all for your support over the 13 years as a pro,” he continued. “It [has] been the best time of my life as I didn't think I would get this far. But I done it and it's thank[s] [to] you.

“Thank you from bottom of my heart [for] all the support from Walsall.”

Real shame he had the issues he did with his eardrum later into his career.

Hope he enjoys a good retirement.

Yep decent career for his ability, can't argue with the decision or the things he's done in his career.

Gethin had an eight-week camp, maybe more, for the Catterall fight, hardly short notice. Terms for the fight had actually been agreed for a while, it was just a case of finding a venue for it.

Yeah got a gym trains amateurs and keep fighters etc

Great servant to Midlands boxing. Midlands, English and British champion and done the hard way never had it easy with a big promoter behind him.

The night he won the British at Walsall Town Hall is still up there as one of my favourite nights at boxing.

His fight before that was on about a weeks notice.

Given his limitations he did well to win the British and fight in a world title final eliminator.

Not too sure if that actually is announcing a retirement - "THINK that's going to be the end of me" is hardly a grand conclusive statement.

Anyway, decent fighter who went as far as his ability would take him which is all anyone can hope for. Good luck for the future if it is indeed retirement

Well said by all :TU: .

Any Boxer who's achieved what he has deserves a world of respect, even more so for carrying on helping train people and kids to keep the sport active and growing now that his career as a professional has come to an end.
