"Canelo Smiles: What Jacobs Did To Golovkin - I Can Do Much More!"

According to Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (48-1-1, 34 KOs), he was not surprised at all when Gennady Golovkin went the full twelve round distance with Daniel Jacobs.

For years, Canelo and his handlers would tell anyone who would listen that Golovkin had flaws and his record of knockouts were not very impressive.

Canelo said..

“We — my camp and I — already knew what kind of fighter [Golovkin] was. We knew these things the media and the world are just seeing now. To us, it’s nothing new. Same ol’ thing.”

“What Danny Jacobs did, I can do much more on that fight night. Golovkin’s style is [one] that he doesn’t know how to go backwards. He doesn’t know how to fight from the outside. He’s very powerful and strong, but he only knows how to fight on the inside. If you’re in front of him, he’s going to get you. But if you’re around him, giving him a hard time … there’s so many ways to beat him,”

..with all this profound knowledge of GGG's flaws, vulnerability etc.. one might start wondering why he's been avoided especially by his most vocal critics...

Though Canelo looks like a complete ass with a comment like this after running away and throwing his belt out to get GGG off his scent, I do think that he has a point. I don't necessarily believe that he has the mobility required to create these types of angles he describes to beat GGG but I think some people certainly do. One guy that comes to mind is Charlo. I think a GGG/Charlo fight would be a very tough fight for GGG. But Canelo, shut up please. Don't make this worse.

If it is part of building the fight, then I am fine with it.

Maybe Canelo has some hidden training technique to give him faster footwork. Canelo is going to need it when and if he fights GGG,

I am pretty sure Canelo is 5'9"? Canelo found out what it was like to jump up a "level" in boxing, getting shut out by Mayweather. I don't consider GGG a better technician than Floyd, but hits a hell of a lot harder. The reason I pick Canelo vs GGG is because it would most likely go to the cards. Canelo doesn't lose decisions. (at least to anyone not named Mayweather) GGG would have to win 10-2 to get the nod, and that may not do it.

I'm pretty sure he was shorter than Floyd in shoeless head to head promotional shots (unless you count his quiff: just google the photos) and it's widely regarded that Floyd's listed 5'8" is generous, so I think most hardcore boxing fans take the 5'9" listing with a pinch of salt. In fact, it's pretty funny that they persist in listing Canelo as 5'9. Why not list him at his true height, seeing as they like to push him as a "smaller" fighter than he really is? People like a tough little guy, seeing as most people are little anyway. Why not be honest that he's a short, stocky guy?

Canelo , is a good fighter not a great fighter and very protected. GGG has slipped some due to age, but if they fight in the next 12 months at MW , Canelo becomes a KO victim.

Canelo is the definition of stocky but (correct me if I'm wrong), I thought males stopped growing at 25. There may have been some room for him to grow taller after the Floyd fight. Anyway back to his original comments, there is no way he can do to Golovkin what Jacobs did, in terms of floating around the ring and throwing light fast flurries.

With regards to height - Canelo looked slightly shorter than the 5'8" Floyd and slightly taller than the 5'7" Cotto, so I think 5'7.5" is probably correct.

Regarding Canelo's comments about GGG, I think he's partly right. GGG doesn't look to have much of a back foot game - he covers up well, but doesn't do much in the way of counter-punching. On the other hand, to say that GGG can't fight on the outside is clearly untrue, especially when you watch his jabbing masterclass against David Lemieux. Of course Canelo is a more skilled fighter than Lemieux, so I wouldn't expect GGG to be able to dominate him with his jab. Jacobs was able to have success on the outside against GGG due to his longer reach, fast hands and good movement. Of those things, Canelo only has the fast hands (he has good upper body movement but lead feet). If Canelo tries to outbox GGG from the outside, you can expect him to be widely outpointed and possibly stopped. On the other hand, if he tries to keep the fight inside, flurries with his faster hands and concentrates his attack on GGG's body, keeping him on the back foot, I could see Canelo getting the win.
