Scottish Boxing!!

Watched the matchroom live on Facebook post fight and see Ricky Burns saying Josh Taylor best stay away from Ohara Davies ! No wonder Scottish boxing is in the doldrums! Scottish boxers should be sitting on the fence when these instances come up and Ricky should be talking Josh up for the sake of the younger boys coming up. I really don't understand how they back guys in their gym, boxing is not a team sport so their is no reason for it. Doesn't matter how much I dislike a Scottish boxer I will always want them to win as any form of Scottish win boosts boxing. People say about Ricky bringing back boxing for Scotland but it's laughable, we have a commonwealth gold medalist in Charlie Flynn fighting on Facebook , a major ticket seller in joe ham on Facebook, a wannabe Scotsman in Scotty Cardle who is about as Scottish as Wayne Rooney, and Iain butcher coming in as the away fighter in his own country against an englishman. It's a joke!!!

It was all the talk amongst boxers and coaches last night, it was estimated over £100k in ticket sale for the Joe Ham v and Flynn fights alone and it was on FB live, yet 2 English guys get on SKY live against very poor opponents, get them on English shows and showcase the Scots, it is after all 7,000 Scots buying the tickets

People say Eddie Hearn saving boxing when in fact he's single handidly killing it. I really believe that he was very capable of filling g the card with Scots who would put on entertaining fights.

That's really poor from Hearn

Does Cardle not shift tickets then up there?

I heard cardle doesn't sell tickets and as stuarty30 says o find it incredible that he isolates himself by stamping him myself in Celtic stuff with a Celtic song in Glasgow, it's just madness. Also he's not Scottish.i would much rather see Scottish boys getting a chance. Fighting each other earlier for example Darren trainer v Charlie Flynn Scottish title and then bringing in Aberdeen based fans. Bring in Dundee fans by using Ronnie Clark,Jamie Wilson or Paul kean. actually building Scottish boxing rather than building just an aging Ricky burns and isolating yourself
To just Alex Morrison stable. Lewis benson sells a shed load of tickets why not make him v ally black over 8 rounds. It just doesn't make sense to me. I like Ricky etc but it's a fact he's not actually built Scottish boxing and the only fighters on the card are Morrisons and who is friends are.

Up to Josh Taylor now. Hope the nation gets behind him.

Scotland has always had a fight scene and now needs a new guy to front it. Last night was not a good result for Scottish boxing but Burns has been in his last legs since the Zlaticanin fight. The 140 run was nothing but farcical.

Burns has been a great servant to British boxing as a whole I just hope Josh gets the support now.

What a load of typical Scottish chip on the shoulder pish!

Burns trains in the same gym as Davies, he's never trained along with Taylor- you expect someone to support a random guy over his pal because he happened to be born on the same side of Hadrian's wall? Maybe Ricky isn't so petty and small minded that he defines everyone by their nationality. Also if Ricky believe that O'hara would win- which many folk do- then he's entitled to express his opinion.

I've heard others complaining about Joe Ham and Charlie Flynn's positions on the card- however, the number of tickets they sold is based on their popularity and profile within their local areas generally. Outside of Scotland (and we all had the chance to get a ticket) nobody knows of either of these two or cares.

The standard Sky viewer is far more aware of josh Kelly and Charlie Edwards and they've got better prospects in the boxing game than Joe or Charlie- no offence to either boxer btw.

They should put josh in with Michelle di Rocco, o guarantee he would get rid of him quicker. Iv always liked Ricky but I hate the fact that he shafted billy although he would never say anything billy took the blame for his decline. I would understand if he had went with someone like Adam booth or or jimmy tibbs but for Peter sims is a sheer insult to billy. He chased the money and loyalty went out the window, he can't even blame lack of sparring as billy always had the best of fighters up here. I hate when people say Ricky is keeping boxing alive up here as every Scottish fighter who has had any form of decent shot up here has been against the odds. I hope josh can pick up the mantle but have a feeling that's gonna be on terrestrial tv or bt sport.

You for real Ricky has known josh for years. I said sit on the fence don't sit and bring down Scottish boxing. The show is in Glasgow the area they are from not England. It'it's a showcase of Scottish boxing . The guys in the audience went to see Scottish fighters. Ricky is a spell out if you were to ask him who would win between between neophyte and felix cash who would he say? He'd sit on the fence I put money on that

Those two fights that were mentioned which were on free on face book would potentially have allot more viewers then on the Sky broadcast,If I was those fighters I wouldn't of minded because of that also going by Hearns IFL interview Sky were wanting the Olypians on the main broadcast and Hearn would of liked your have had the other fights on the Sky broadcast if he could, but it's Skys choice really.

Di Rocco fight Charlie Flynn was In the ring at midnight we about twenty fans there. Stewart burt cancelled fight and Lewis Paulin almost beat cause he had been warming up
For about 3 hours. I can't for the life work out what Ricky has done for these boys, these boys do more for Ricky than Ricky will ever do for them, without these boys shows don't happen in the hydro on that stage. Ricky fights, that's it!

Burns has been a revelation for Scottish boxing for the last 7/10 years, a perfect example of how far a fighter can go with sheer graft, determination,, will to win, a great engine, insane heart, sturdy chin and a bit of genourous judging, ive been watching Ricky since he fought Arthur over a decade ago and TBH I'm still in shock how he's managed to achieve what he has, he's had some questionable defences and scoring but even that aside I'm still shocked at how much he's achieved

Isnt fast
Doesn't hit hard
No footwork
Can't fight on inside
No punch variety
Not particularly tall apart from at SFW
People go on about his great jab, I cant personally see it, ive never seen him snap anyone head back
Even his engine you could argue isn't all that much because he forever takes the 1st 6 rounds off before getting to work

I'm not slating Burns I'm just amazed at what someone can achieve with sheer will to win and world class heart, he's been hurt visably in a lot of fights, no more so than last night where I thought Indongo was gonna force the corner to throw the towel in around about the 8th but you can never right off Burns, someone with Indongo's unorthodox attributes was always gonna give the basic Burns kittens

Josh Taylor on the other hand is someone who has talent, skill and ability in abundance, very early days but IMO has the tools to become the best fighter out of Scotland since Buchanan, he's not the usual gritty scrapper who gets the job done with no frills, this is not just a Scottish Boxing thing, Scottish sport in general has always been us as either glorious failures or scraping a win, although even our football team cant scrape a win these days

Taylor could be the most talented athlete to come out of here since Andy Murray , he'll need Murray's dediction though and have that desire to improve and evolve as an athlete if he wants to reach the top, not to mention it remains to be seen whether Taylor has a smidge of the heart, chin and dedication Burns has shown the sport over the years, as I said Taylor has bags and bags more talent than Burns ever had so he wont have to got the well as often as Ricky but if Taylor wants to reach the top, stay there and not just become an ABC champ defending against sub standard opposition then at some point his heart etc will be called upon and that's where the appreciation of Burns comes in

Jamie give it up!
This thread is an embarrisment to yourself and Scottish boxing.
Burns is Davies stable mate, he will always go with his stable mate, 'Being Scottish is fornicate all to do with it.

Look at the whole Smith brothers backing Crolla ahead of fellow Scouser Derry Matthews and you will see it's pretty common.

Did he shaft Billy Nelson? I think you might be in the minority of that. I am.sire if he 'shafted' him We would have heard Billy mention it as he's quite active on these pages.

Don't care if the are gym mates you sit on the fence. There's a difference between a country and a city. We arnt blessed with an abundance of talent and the one talent we really do have our champion is talking down. I'm sure it's the fact Ricky doesn't fancy that fight anyways.

So you believe that Ricky has improved since leaving billy? And you believe sims is a better trainer? I don't even like billy and I know that's not true. He did shaft billy!

Jamie I'm pretty sure that SKY would have had a bit say on when Joe Ham and Charlie Flynn were on the bill, one was for a Scottish title and the other a Celtic title. Not saying these titles don't matter but Edwards vs Butcher and Cardle vs Barrett were for the British title and then Ricky Burns in a unification. I personally would have preferred to have seen Joe or Charlie but I'm 99% sure that anyone bar Scottish boxing fans really care about these 2 careers unless they were fighting for bigger titles.

I disagree that it will have done nothing for Charlie or Joe's careers either, they have been part of a big card where they have been the home fighter, got used to doing interviews etc Ok they have not been shown on the main card but the experience will do wonders for them going forward.

I like your passion Jamie but what do you really expect Ricky to say? He trains with Ohara every day in the gym and if we are being realistic Josh Taylor is a potential opponent for Ricky within 12 months if Josh carries on progressing at the rate he is so why wouldn't he start trying to get into Josh's head by saying his training partner is too good at the minute?

Don't be so touchy mate.

The sad fact is that with Burns' defeat that's the end of SKY boxing in Scotland for the foreseeable future. There has been regular big fight nights in Scotland since 2000 with the Tyson fight at Hampden and its been fortunate that Harrison, Arthur and Burns were about to keep it going.
Josh Taylor is the only TV fighter left at the moment, although Brophy might come into that category.
Can I also say that for me Burns has not improved at all since moving camp to England. While watching the fight last night, out of frustration, I could have thrown his entire corner out after 4 rounds and found an amateur coach from the crowd who would have given Ricky better advice. All he did was circle to his right away from the right hand for 12 rounds. I don't remember him landing a worthwhile punch the entire fight. It was shocking. The crowd was desperate for Ricky to get stuck in, at least to give it a go, and they would have cheered him on. I found his performance to be incredible.

Indongo fight was a high risk/high reward fight, no one really knew if Indongo was world class or if he just got lucky in his previous fight against the Russian lad. Unfortunately for Ricky Indongo looked very good last night, he used his reach well, was very accurate with his body shots and systematically took Ricky apart whilst keeping him at bay with the jab.

Ricky has struggled badly with southpaws in the past and it amazes me that with his experience he just can't seem to fathom them out and find a way to deal with a southpaw but like I said earlier Indongo used his attributes so well that even a prime Ricky would have struggled to beat that guy imo.

On him not improving since moving to Tony Sims, I think its hard for any fighter who is in the twilight of their career to improve that much, I think the move was more Ricky getting stale at Billy's gym and he probably thought the move would just freshen him up and revitalise him. No one would have managed to transform Ricky at 31/32 years of age. Has it worked? Only Ricky can answer that but I know him and Billy remain good friends since the split and after what they achieved that is good to know.

Alex Morrison is still Ricky's manager and he wouldn't be doing his job if he didn't try and secure more of his fighters on the bill when Ricky is headlining on a TV bill in Glasgow. Of course I would rather see fighters from different stables on the bill and hopefully if Eddie is still planning on running shows in Scotland he opens his eyes to the other fighters available in the country and not just one stable of fighters.

Haven't read every post but I think if sky take a show, the local fighters should get some opportunity, whether it be Scotland, Liverpool, Birmingham, Newcastle etc. That seems right to me.

I can appreciate burns showing loyalty to a gym mate over a rival stable. Just as he's said this one comment it doesn't turn him into Amir Khan, aka king twat. Though I don't agree with the comment, we do t want Taylor to stay away from Davies, that's a great fight at the weight of like to see

It's the background to Morrisons supposed exclusivity that interests me. Camp Eddie does seem to like dealing with House Trainers/managers

Scottish boxing, apart from a few standouts (Buchanan, Dick Mctaggart and arguably Burns, Harrison and Watt) has always been pretty pish.

Scotland seem to be terrible at every sport; they must be the least athletic, most scrawny, pale people in the world. The only sport they seem to be ok at is that ridiculous sport on ice where they roll something that looks like a massive cheese and then scrub the ice with some old garden brooms....and I've never ever met anyone who's ever played this, so maybe that's why they do well. No one else plays the silly game.
