How do you see a fight between Ezzard Charles (1951) v Floyd Patterson (1961)?

I'd go with Ezzard Charles on points.

Patterson had speed, power & skill to burn & would have been a handful for anyone weighing about 190.

You could pretty much flip a coin on this one. Very evenly matched. I think at his very best (Moore, Johannson II, Machen), Patterson would win. Of course he had his share of shaky moments. A early round stoppage is possible, but it will probably go several rounds, if not the distance.

A pretty close matchup. Two highly skilled and really special boxers. Btw they are number and two of great boxers, who had been knocked down for the most of times. Very likely they both would have touched the canvas in their bout. I see Charles winning close, but then Patterson catching him.

When I see the great Ezzard Charles resume is the who's of who of boxing. He was very special. Charles by late KO.

Terrific matchup! Charles by decision would be my gut guess. They could split 10 fights 50/50.

Charles by KO, imo.

Instead of prime to prime!

What about the match-up when it could have actually happened, 1955-1956?

A 55/56 fight puts Charles a year after Marciano II and Patterson before Archie Moore; they have a common opponent in Tommy Jackson at this time.

Had Charles defeated Tommy Jackson either of the two times they met in '55, it makes one think that a Patterson fight may have become a reality.

At this time, under theses circumstances I would give Patterson the nod, possibly even by KO.

Yes, you are right on that one. But, by that time, it wasn't the same Ezzard Charles of the previous decade. He was in the decline by 1955.

Oh yes, I appreciate that, but I believe it still would have been a great fight.

I brought it up because I think it may actually have come close to happening. When you look at Charles record at that time you get the feeling that if he had beaten Tommy Jackson, the December '56 elimination Patterson-Moore fight may very well have been Charles-Patterson instead. (IMHO)

Charles was a nightmare for anybody. Prime for prime no doubt he wins. As for the 1955 scenario... I'll roll the dice and go with Charles... Only because the younger Patterson sometimes tried to be too aggressive for his own good, and Charles had a helluva chin and could come out on top because Floyd didn't have a good chin.

I'm with you.

Charles would need to be in his pomp to beat Patterson, because at their respective bests, they were closely matched, but Ezzard was on the decline '55/'56.
