Freddie Roach: Scott Quigg trains harder than Manny Pacquiao

Former world champion Scott Quigg has a better work ethic than Manny Pacquiao, according to trainer Freddie Roach.

Quigg, 28, moved to work under hall of fame inductee Roach at California's prestigious Wildcard Gym in February.

Quigg, who meets Romanian Viorel Simion in an eliminator for the IBF featherweight title held by Lee Selby, said he is now "a different fighter".

"He's the only guy who works harder than Pacquiao," said Roach, who also trains the eight-weight world champion.

"That's a big call," added the seven-time winner of the Boxing Writers' of American Trainer of the Year award.

"His work ethic is great and we've seen a lot of really good changes already in the gym."

Quigg, who lost the IBF super-bantamweight world title to Carl Frampton in 2016, won on his only outing at featherweight in December.

The meeting with Simion, who has one defeat in 22 fights, forms part of the undercard to Anthony Joshua's heavyweight title fight with Wladimir Klitschko at Wembley Stadium.

It will be Quigg's first bout since parting ways with Manchester-based trainer Joe Gallagher.

"I've always wanted to keep improving," said Bury-born Quigg. "I'm walking into the gym with Freddie and I feel like I'm back in school, keeping on learning. The sparring, the quality, just being around that environment I feel a different fighter.

"I think it's the best place to be. You're sparring all different kinds, you can't get better preparation. The subtle changes that have been made I'm putting into practice against world level opposition. I'm confident on Saturday night you will see the best ever Scott Quigg."

Not sure how good Quigg will be at featherweight. He was a huge SBW, but he won't have that size advantage anymore. Guys like Valdez, GRJ, and Selby are huge.

He KO'd Cayetano who had never been KO'd and LSC couldn't KO, so we have some idea.

Quigg is 5ft 8" with a 69" reach.
Valdez is 5ft 5 1/2" with a 66" reach.
Russell is 5ft 4 1/2" with a 64" reach.
Selby is 5ft 8 1/2" with a 69" reach.

So the only guy that compares is Selby. I have no idea what you're talking about.

That statement doesnt really shock me to be honest. Quigg- whilst flawed in some areas, has always appeared (from the outside looking in atleast) to have a tremendous work ethic and has always been in tremendous shape.

I can see him making a statement tomorrow, another impressive stoppage.

Can only improve for me.

5'8" seems like an inflated listing...he generally looked maybe an inch taller than Frampton, and I think he's more realistically be around 5'6"

I was about to say the same. Quigg is NOT 5' 8"

5' 6" or so sounds about right. Also, you aren't getting the thing about frames. GRJ and Valdez all started as featherweights. Valdez used to go up to ~130 lbs. He has a larger frame than Quigg. Also, Cateyano is small as hell. LSC isn't a heavy hitter. Quigg does hit hard, but I have doubts his size advantage would translate to any power at FW.

I think its a good matchup , and you will see improvements in Quigg ,, It seems to me quigg is a good boxer but not a great thinker , he needs to be told what to do and when , Wether thats whats been drummed into him by Gallager or not i don't know , its irrelevent really , But what is relevant is on the big stage Gallagher seems to lose the plot a bit and the occasion seems to get to him .. Roach on the other hand is more used to the massive fights and keeps it together more .. This alone i think will benefit Quigg
