The Top 100 game: Next 26 *GAME CLOSED*
Posted: 04 May 2017, 10:57
by Crease
Our FINAL thread in the series, following the success of the Heavyweight, Light Heavyweight, Middleweight, Welterweight, Lightweight, Featherweight, Bantamweight and Flyweight threads...
This is a game which will be decided by the wisdom of the crowd.
Each of us has our own opinions on who was better than who, or which achievement was greater than others.
But let's bring it all together and allow simple mathematics to decide it all.
The game is this, each poster names and ranks his final 26 boxers of all time and with each selection comes a point.
Posters are NOT allowed to edit their posts or change their minds as it will effect the overall accumulated points for each fighter.
So, through the original eight weight divisions - we extract our top ten from each of the threads and we include the fighters in our all-time top 100 discussion.
This creates a lit of seventy four fighters, but we are still 26 places short of our top 100.
So our members are asked to name their 26 fighters (not on this list) and each of them will be given a point for every mention they receive.
I will keep a track of the total scoring each time I'm online. This game has a 30-day deadline, after 30 days - the final points totals will be decided.
Our deadline day will be June 1st.

I'm looking forward to posting my 26 names... I'll definitely be including Wilfredo Gomez - think that he's a certainty to get in.
And looking at the Super Middles - I'll be giving a point each to Joe Calzaghe and Carl Froch.
If I'm being honest, there's not that many Cruiserweights that I would consider to be great boxers, so I'll probably ignore most of the better ones.

Thanks for this, Crease. I'm finding it difficult because it's not divided into weight classes but will try to get my names in...

I got to see Wilfredo Gomez fight (Mario Gonzalez KO6) at the Miami Beach Convention Center, back in '88. It was quite the treat' - I got to sit close. It was his first fight after losing the (WBA) title, so tickets prices weren't through the roof; we popped $50 each to sit ringside; worth it.

There are fighters I never listed who I would rate higher overall then a few of the ones I did select, and this would be on the basis of what they did over more than one weight class.

Same, I'll keep tabs on it but this one is a bit too much work for me. Even the division ratings I know aren't accurate without a lot of research.

Guys like Packey McFarland, Sam Langford, and Jimmy Barry are hard to rate in one weight class. But, they were fighting in different weight classes that it's hard to rate them specifically in one class.
Peter Jackson, to me, is a top 100 ATG pound per pound boxer. I studied his record and career and he was very impressive. We should have a look at this guy.

Also, the great Manny Pacquiao is kind of hard to rate him in a weight class specifically.

OK, I will give this a shot. My 26 are:
Marco Antonio Barrera
Wilfred Benitez
Nino Benvenuti
Jack Kid Berg
Riddick Bowe
Marcel Cerdan
Julio Cesar Chavez
Oscar De La Hoya
Wilfredo Gomez
Beau Jack
James J. Jeffries
Harold Johnson
Roy Jones Jr.
Jake LaMotta
Sonny Liston
Jimmy McLarnin
Bob Montgomery
Erik Morales
Shane Mosely
Azumah Nelson
Manny Pacquiao
Aaron Pryor
Luis Rodrigues
Vincente Saldivar
Dick Tiger
Mike Tyson
Obviously there are going to be some tough calls. Several great fighters that I had to leave out.
I would hope that Benitez, Pacquiao, Chavez, and McLarnin would be obvious choices. They probably could be in the Top 50 all time, not just the top 100.

OK - I recognize my error regarding the double posting of Duran (LW & WW) - but there are several names on both lists, should I vote for Terry McGovern and have him in the top 100 as both a BW and FW - same with Duran, Alexis Arguello, ETC. Please advise - ????

Holman Williams, the Gibbons bros. along with the obvious Pacquiao, Jones, Chavez and McLarnin were the first names on my list, the rest I whittled down from about 50-60 or so candidates without too much hard science. A shame the likes of Joe Brown, Jimmy Bivins, Harold Johnson, Luis Manuel Rodriguez, Jimmy Barry, Vicente Salvidar etc etc etc have missed out again but I'm pretty happy with that 26.

NOT select any of the above 74 fighters, because they have already made in into our top 100.
Vote for 26 fighters who are not on the top 100 list.
