Canelo Alvarez ... How do you rank his power ?

Canelo's power stings and he has had some eye catching power moments.
But is that going to be enough to consistently push back or deter a Golovkin ?
Does he have that kind of strength ?

It's solid, but if he's not facing someone notoriously glass-chinned or significantly undersized he seems to often need a large accumulation of blows to do serious damage.

Remember how many flush power shots Angulo took for ten rounds without going down?

From 10, when julian jackson is a 9,9 and arthur abraham like a 9,6. Id say canelo 9,1. GGG around 9,8.

Scale of 1-10
1 Weak
10 Strong

On general power of punch his average is about a 7.
Wild swings haymakers and the rest of it he can punch harder, but a regular output of punches would put him at around 7.

He had a good (but not outstanding) power at 154-155. At 160, I would say it is just pretty good. 7-7.5 out of 10 sounds about right.

It looks like he has good thudding power. But not that snapping type of power. I have little doubt that had it been Golovkin landing those same shots last night, JR would not have reached the 12th round.

Yesterday he looked like he carried Chavez Jr out of respect ... a Mexican thing, mark of respect so to speak.
Alvarez could have kicked his ass anytime so easily but didn't do so or even launch a serious front for long enough to make that happen.
Canelo had Chavez Jr in his sights throughout the entire fight, yes he unloaded here and there but this was Canelo LITE.

Canelo's output was no lower than it usually is

He doesn't throw a lot of punches and only has one gear

Just not true ^
How is he supposed to get motivated for a weak chinned Khan who he KO'd and an unmotivated limited weighed drained Chavez Jr ?

Canelo is not known for fighting the full three minutes of a round. Or being active for three minutes. Canelo takes a lot of breaks after flurries. Don't think Canelo was seriously playing possum going into the ropes against Jr. Canelo was taking breaks. As for power I'd say Canelo's is respectable. Canelo hits hard enough to get respect.

Agree to disagree ... Canelo went to the ropes voluntarily.

It is true though

His output is relatively low and very consistent from fight to fight, regardless of the opponent's calibre; in which other bouts did he throw significantly more punches?

There's the post I was looking for.

I do agree the thought that Canelo was carrying Jr. All Canelo had to do was step on the gas. I thought the same thing watching. Why not end this mismatch fiasco. On second thoughts or a day after the fight I have doubts Canelo was capable of doing that. Canelo has respectable power. But I think Canelo also takes a lot of breaks, could be a stamina issue.

Case by case basis do Canelo then ?
I've brought up Lara.

It seemed to that he was going to the ropes to catch a rest from time to time. I highly doubt he carried Jr the whole 12 out of respect. If he could have gotten him outta there, he would have.

I don't think he was carrying him either. You combine his output limitations with Jr's survival focused approach and ability to take everything he was landing, and you have a distance fight.

Firing straight rights off the ropes or straight up squared with no lead is a significant sign, Roy Jones Jr did that many times.

Chavez seemed to take Canelo's power OK for the most part. It did limit Jrs output for sure, but besides a body shot and an uppercut at some point, he didn't seem to lose his legs at any point. And he took a whole lot of clean shots. As long as Golovkin hasn't slipped, Canelo's conservative approach is going to really hurt him. I believe that G will be able to take Canelo's power a lot better than the other way around.

IMO, any fighter who carries another fighter in any fight, much less a fight billed as big as this one, is a fool. Canelo doesn't seem like a fool. He was landing cleanly and often and Chavez wasn't going anywhere. So, he decided to pick his shots and conserve energy.

That's what I think GGG's team will have him capitalize on when they fight. Canelo's breaks. If GGG can keep the pressure on consistently he will win the fight.

I think so as well... I expect G to be cautious going in though. Maybe a bit like the Lemiux fight, except being a bit more aggressive in coming forward with the jab. It's a very interesting fight. I won't be surprised to see Canelo outbox G at times. But, I think G's shifting and power will get it done in the end.

GGG could well go through him, remember Pac Man destroying Barrera .

Think so too. I don't necessarily agree that GGG destroy's Canelo or KO's him like some think. See it as a tactical fight GGG being the more active of the two. Canelo is a true professional fighter. Canelo is good. So is GGG.

UD win for GGG.

In order to win a decision against Canelo, Golovkin needs to CLEARLY win at least 9 rounds. All close rounds will be given to Canelo. GGG needs to go for a stoppage.
