What do you think of the ending to this fight? I think the stoppage was premature, but I also think that Holmes would have stopped Snipes anyway. Even if he didn't, Holmes was winning the fight.

I think it was a borderline call.
Personally, I'd have liked to have seen the ref give Snipes a few more seconds to see if he could fight his way out of it, but in all likelihood, he wouldn't have.

One things for sure, if that fight happened today Snipes would be the heavyweight championship of the world.

Because in round seven when Holmes stumbled clear across the ring into the turnbuckle every ref in the world would stop it.

Wow. Just watched the 6th and 7th round. Forgot how highly entertaining that fight was, at least those rounds were. Refs see a guy stumble now and don't wait the 8 sec to see if he recovered. I'm no fan of Zab Judah but one of his fights was stopped in the 2nd round like that.

I just remember watching and thinking during that fight when it was shown live on TV,
if Snipes grew some pork -chop side burns,
he would look just like Black Belt Jones.

I like Renaldo, but lets not insult the great Jim Kelly like that.

BTW Did you know that Jim Kelly was a cousin of Muhammad Ali's ?
Jim Kelly was from Paris Kentucky.

Hardly an original thing to say but Larry's recuperative qualities were insane

yeas,I remember watching the fight live (and for Free on Network TV)
and my Hungry-Man TV dinner went flying up into the air from the 1970's era collapsable metal tray holder
when Snipes knocked down Holmes.

How come HW's can't jab like that today :(

You'll never see AJ get out-jabbed by a Light Heavyweight... And you'll never see him catching a massive loaded right hander from as inept a swinger as Reynaldo Snipes... Many referees would have stopped that fight when Holmes went lurching into the ropes as he beat the count... The ending was a BS stoppage.

What a terrible post,how can you compare AJ against the great Larry Holmes at this stage of his career,many referees would stop it now,doesn't mean it's the right stoppage as Holmes showed numerous times he has amazing powers of recovery,at this stage AJ isn't fit to lace Holmes's boots in my opinion.

Sounds like your implying that perhaps AJ has a better skillset than Larry.

I vividly remember watching this fight.
The fight should not have have been stopped. (I remember Snipes arguing about it and got cut when his trainers were tying to cut off the tape on his gloves)

It just smelled when you don't stop it when Holmes was hurt worse and they didn't stop it.
However, Holmes was way ahead and probably would have won anyway. Still, Snipes deserved the chance.

That's amazing. They probably exchanged some fight tips over the years. Unfortunately both are gone now.

I was always extremely impressed by Holmes.. He is an ATG Heavyweight Champion there's no doubt.. He may be the best Heavyweight of the 20th Century. It's possible. But I like to search for a boxer's vulnerabilities no matter how great he is.. Holmes got hit with rights coming straight at you.

AJ would crush Holmes with the right... And I'm not going by the Snipes' and Shavers' right handers that came close to putting Holmes out.. Lewis was caught with harder shots than that.. Tim Witherspoon had 15 pro fights and gave Holmes the fight of his life because of his talented right hand.. Holmes fought like a demon but the decision was in doubt.. You had to wait for the scores to come in because it was that close. They gave a couple close rounds to the man who had sacrificed so many years to perfect his skills and build a lasting legacy. Tim needed to give more to beat the bigger name.

That night I thought maybe 2 or 3 years development and Witherspoon would take over the Heavyweight Division. But he never got any better. You shouldn't peak in your 16th fight but he would get real fat, not train properly, do drugs, anything but dedicate himself...a shame.. Page, Douglas, Cooney, Thomas, so many '80's Heavyweights got caught up in substance abuse and never reached their potential. Fury won't make it either.

That why you have to respect guys who work so hard like the K Bros and Joshua... Even with 19 pro fights, AJ's right hand is nothing to screw with.. He's living the dream that was born when he won the Olympic Gold Medal 5 years ago... Now that he's had so much success is he going to slack off and go south like so many others? .. I doubt it.. He's one of the more goal oriented boxers out there.. Two years from now he'll be better, not worse.

And you don't think Holmes would be able to ram hard accurate jabs into Joshua's face because of the lack of head movement ?

You don't think Joshua would tire severely down the stretch in a 15 round fight ?

Witherspoon was a much better fighter at the same stage as Joshua is now.

Holmes fought many dangerous punchers,including arguably the biggest heavyweight puncher of all time,twice but was stopped once by a peak Mike Tyson after a long lay off.

If Joshua was the same weight as Holmes and not over 2.5 stones heavier,he would never beat Larry.Only the weight difference gives an advantage to most heavies nowadays,not skills,power,certainly not stamina.

I meant what I said. You have to learn how to read kid. Go slow so you'll understand. 1. You'll never see Joshua get out-jabbed by a Light Heavyweight... 2. You won't see Joshua flattened with a right hand by anyone as incompetent as Reynaldo Snipes... Was Larry Holmes an ATG Heavyweight Champion with superb skills??? He was from the list you get to choose from.. Was he the greatest Heavyweight of all time??? NO. Larry did a lot of risky things in the ring and out.. He was lucky to go undefeated for so long.. When he physically assaulted Trevor Berbick in public, that was over-the-top.

Snipes greatest moment was a pure Hail Mary......not taking anything away from him, but it's a fact.

Even Randall "Tex" Cobb would have busted his snot box, but Snipes was a little too shy to sign on the line.

At least according to Tex.

Snipes was willing to fight Holmes, Witherspoon, Coetzee, Thomas etc. but was afraid of Tex Cobb?

Snipes was an awkward fighter. He had some ability. He could punch, but wasn't aggressive enough. He had some good performances, but the lost to Evangelista was embarrassing. The judges didn't seem to like him.

When he was overmatched he often performed well. When he was expected to win he was often disappointing.
