Davies apparent offer to Taylor

Apparently Hearn made a 70k offer to Taylor which his trainer Shane McGuigan slammed as derisory. Hearn also said they'd be willing to take the fight on a Cyclone show if they were willing to make an offer. Both fighters have expressed their interest in facing each other so I'm hoping this happens sooner rather than later. It's a very good fight with two young unbeaten prospects. The more of these type of fights the better.

Groves and DeGale got it on early and it didn't harm either of them although DeGale had to rebuild the hard way although that was down to promotional issues as well.

I'd love to see Taylor chin that little prick and clamp his mouth.

That does sound like a big time low-ball. They both look like world level fighters. Surely they could pack a house somewhere?

It would sell out up here in some arena in Edinburgh or Glasgow. Not sure about down south tbh. Both of them aren't really that well known to the casual element.

Taylor has fought at the Meadowbank a couple of times. I'm not sure what the full capacity is in there but it's a great atmosphere when full. Alex Arthur v Michael Gomez was there back in the day and it was manic!

Frampton is apparently supposed to be fighting at Windsor Park outdoors in August. Taylor v O'Hara on that bill would work.

I seen a few of the messages mate. Not sure what to make of it. I think Taylor would be confident of beating Davies and obviously Davies isn't short on confidence. It's a fuckin headache when trainers, promoters and excuses start getting in the way of good fights. If it were upto the fighters and the money was right there wouldn't be an issue I wouldn't have thought.

I can imagine Barry McGuigan being a bit of a pain in the prick to deal with.

Yeah I think when Hearn emailed Team McGuigan it was directed to Shane's brother he seems easier to deal with.

I am with Hearn on this one which is rare. 70k is a very good offer and like he said make them an offer if they don't like it.

If that's a good offer than it's no surprise why boxing is flourishing there. Overpaid fighters is what killed the sport here.

Anyone have an idea of what they've made for their last few fights?

70k isn't that much after expenses, payments to his team and tax are taken out is it? He's losing 28k to the taxman straight away.

I don't know what is a good purse but it doesn't seem that long a go folks got about 10k for a British title defence. I guess things have moved on which is good for the fighters.

It was a massive deal when Appleby got £40k to defend the British against Lindsay, although that was eight years ago.

Regarding the Meadowbank capacity, I'm sure it's about 3000.

I think that Davies is a little underrated and that most would pick Taylor to win; personally I wouldn't be hugely shocked if Davies won the fight,

Think it is about 2.5/3k mate :TU: Sounds double that when its jumping. Same as the Odyssey in Belfast. I think that's only about 6k but it sounds a lot more when you're there.

I remember when I first heard Appleby was going to Belfast to fight Lindsay I thought it was suicide! Simpson went over and fought him as well there and boxed his head off.

I have got to say I thought Ohara Davies was just a gobshite but to be fair he is very very decent.. I thought this would be a cake walk for Josh but I'm not too sure now £70k is a fantastic offer for this fight. I can't see Cyclone being able to match that or pay Josh that for his next fight. Do they feel it's too Risky? I think Josh may be getting a bit too much hype up here in Scotland all our hopes are on his shoulders and although a very good Amateur he was beaten quite a lot and I remember Tom Stalker being preferred to him at 60kg at the Olympics and Josh needing to box at the next weight 64kg I believe.. Josh also lost to Ohara's stablemate Martin J Ward so maybe that's what is giving Davies the confidence.

In saying all that I would still favour Josh to pull it off. I think he is a class act and is improving under Shane.. Come on guys sign the fight give us what we all want..

70k for 10th fight after the last one was at a sports centre. Fck me! You could buy a street up there for that.

I remember Stalker beating him in the Commonwealth final in 2010 I think it was. Wasn't really close but he was a teenager at the time. I always thought Josh would be better suited to the pro game. I was disappointed when he never turned over after the 2012 games but he ended up getting the gold in Glasgow in 2014 so fair play.

I think him and Davies is a real 50/50 fight. Davies looks the type who doesn't care about entertaining and would be happy to sit patient until his opponent commits. It must be a nightmare fighting someone like that with quick reflexes. Josh looks quick enough to get in and out and pick up the rounds. Very interesting fight. Fingers crossed for this being made.

Davies looks rather sloppy to me (I can see the lack of am experience), and I'm not convinced of his power against good opponents. Someone mentioned him being underrated, but, for the most part, I think he gets rated just fine based on what he's shown and who he's beaten (best wins= a very lackluster decision over Sugar Ray Scarpa, and a stoppage of shopworn, KO'd 9 times Matthews who immediately retired).

Taylor has been getting a bit overrated, so probably not as much between the two as many think, but he still looks the sharper fighter to me.

I could be mistaken but I do not believe you would be taxed on the whole purse but only his take home after expenses, managers and trainers cuts etc. And £28k is worked out at 40 per cent and would need him to have earned over the 40% threshold the rest of the year and I am not sure if he has / will have.

Saw this during the week and want to give my opinion.

As I have said previously not only is Ohara Davies an absolute bellend. He is playing the "heel" role pretty well. He has said he likes WWE and that is what he is doing. It works because I personally can not wait until he is smashed and plenty of others are the same . Grossly overrated fighter who has proved nothing yet and will be matched very carefully.

Now Josh Taylor. He looks decent but I think he is also over rated mainly because he is Scottish and they need a new stars. On the flip side to Davies Josh does seem to have a good attitude. Still very unproven.

Sure £70,000 looks a good offer but we don't know what more there is to it. Fight Options other agreements etc etc. I also don't think promoters should be discussing money like this in public. It is probably a lot more than what Josh has made before and they should be taking that if it doesn't mean Josh effectively becomes a matchroom fighter if he wins. It is not like Hearsn BS chequer to Frampton. There is no PPV split for this fight.

I'd like to see a Shane or Barry detailed response.

I think this saga goes on for a while and by the time the belts at 140 become fragmented and one of them gets a vacant title we may see it.

Like someone pointed out 70 grand for a 10 fight pro , who's use to leisure centres is good money , whats his option, fight for 3 grand against a latvian taxi driver . . I suspect its more about promoters and trainers, wanting to cash in has much has possible, at the expense of the fighter , after all if they think he's worth more , promote and pay him more , but thats not likely to happen , they want Eddie to do it for them .

Problem with playing games is unless your names Joshua , or you have a famous fighter , or you have a high profile with runs on the board , you stand the chance of pricing yourself right out of the market and into the arms of oblivion ...

I like Davis. Don't know much about Taylor but I saw one of his fights & he looks decent enough.

I don't think they should meet just yet. Plenty of overseas fighters & half a dozen titles for them to choose from.

Another year or two & this fight could be massive. Now it's just blah....

I think it's a good fight just now but you're right it could be bigger in the next couple of years. Then again one of em could be exposed and the fight loses some of its value. I'd like to see more young prospects throwing caution to the wind and fighting one another more often. There's far too much emphasis put on a loss nowadays. It shouldn't matter too much on the grand scale of things. If they're good enough and dedicated enough they'll come again (eg James DeGale).

I think both of them could move up a few levels in the coming years, possibly to world level. The division will more or less be blown wide open when Crawford finally moves up to 147.

It's a real 50/50 fight. I give the edge to Taylor maybe being a bit bias but I think he's certainly better to watch than Davies. Davies strikes me as one of these overly patient types that will be in a lot of boring fights like Witter back in the day.
