De La Hoya: No Mayweather Model, I Made Canelo-GGG For Fans!

Post by Ruthless-RKO »

Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya admits that he could have easily matched his biggest star, Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (49-1-1, 34 KOs), against opponents who presented far less risk than Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin (37-0, 33 KOs).

2016 was a real bad year for the sport, where mismatches were being made in abundance - and fans were getting fed up.

De La Hoya blames the blueprint left behind by Floyd Mayweather Jr., who retired back in September of 2015. Mayweather was often criticized by insiders, who often felt the former pound-for-pound king was usually following the plan of selecting opponents who made him the most money while presenting the least amount of risk.

De La Hoya says it was time for a change - which is why he finalized Canelo-Golovkin for Mexican Independence Day weekend.

"All these fighters are using the old model that Mayweather left behind where it's all about money, and therefore no fights are getting done," De La Hoya said to ESPN.

"It's different now. I made this Canelo fight with Golovkin for the sport, for the fans. Yes, there's a lot of money in this fight, but I could have made four smaller fights with Canelo that are not as risky as the Golovkin fight. But I was a fighter myself. I understand what the fans want, and therefore I made it happen. I understand the business, and most important, I understand what the fans want and need.

"This fight is the cherry on top of 2017. The year has shaped up to be really nice. Boxing fans can be very proud of what the fighters and promoters have done. I'm just happy I can deliver the biggest events of the year with Canelo. Everyone was trying to make a quick buck or an easy dollar. The difference now is they're making money, we're all making money, but we're taking risks. With risk comes reward."

And De La Hoya is taking the same approach with Golden Boy's new series on ESPN. He's matching his fighters in tough. The most recent broadcast saw two of Golden Boy's fighters get upset - when Yuriorkis Gamboa was stopped by Robinson Castellanos and Jesus Rojas knocked out previously unbeaten Abraham Lopez.

"I promised exciting fights, upsets and that's what we're getting. There's no stopping us," De La Hoya said. "I'm not going to tell my (matchmakers) to take it easy. There's too much action. I'm very, very bullish on growing the sport and keeping it alive and making it more exciting fights and building the next stars, the next champions on our ESPN series."

I don't think that Oscar could delay the GGG fight any longer and was forced into it more than orchestrating it like he explains but I'd take credit for it too if i were him.

I really do hope that TMT keeps underpaying it's fighters and Floyd's stable of fighters doesn't grow significant market share because Oscar and Floyd negotiations will become the next cold war in Boxing.

"De La Hoya: Canelo-GGG Needs Marinating To Be Boxing's Biggest"

According to De La Hoya, the fight will happen when it is at the highest point to make.

“It’s a fight everyone wants to see, but as a promoter I want it to be the biggest in the sport to bring back the fans we lost with the Mayweather-Pacquiao pay-per-view,” De La Hoya said.

We have to do a little marinating for it to be the biggest fight in the sport, it has to happen at the right time.

So Oscar De La Hoya claims to have orchestrated the Canelo-GGG fight for sporting reasons, for the benefit of the sport and the fans, but last year he claimed (as per his role as a promoter) that he wanted to delay the scheduling of the bout in order to grow and maximise the revenue that such a marquee event would generate?

Can you please supply any website links so that I can understand your allegations about Floyd Mayweather Jr. underpaying his fighters?

In regards to your belief about Floyd and Oscar engaging in some sort of “cold war”, what makes you say that?

I’m not saying you’re wrong and nor am I trying to engage in an argument – it’s just that I’ve never heard of these allegations before.

I believe Badou Jack earned $700,000 for his unification fight whilst DeGale earned $750,000

I don't know if that's a low amount for a unification.

Now, If we think that's being underpaid, that's clearly opinion. That may have been Jack's highest purse and he may have been happy with that, so he won't say he was underpaid.

Even Frampton got $900,000 for his rematch with Santa Cruz..

I don't believe the paydays earned by Badou Jack when he fought George Groves ($500K) and James DeGale ($700K) are small.

Gennady Golovkin earned less money (or in a few cases similar sums) for his first 14 world title fights, than what Badou Jack received when he fought James DeGale.

Carl Frampton has always been a big earner, he was paid $2.17m to face Scott Quigg.

..can be both, with financial considerations taking the precedence imo..

Yes, I agree, it can be both. However, we know for certain that the delay itself (by Oscar’s own admission) was caused by GBP, with the sole intention to generate interest in the fight in order to maximise PPV buys.

So his priority was clearly money, yet he’s now portraying himself as being worthy as receiving praise for arranging this fight for the benefit of the sport and the fans, as if he's some sort of saintly philanthropist, whilst conveniently excluding the fact that the only reason for delay was due to him trying to maximise revenue generation.

He’s putting a spin on things, which I guess most promoters do, but as an avid follower of the sport, I have to take his comments with a pinch of salt, due to the previous claims that he has made conflicting with his most recent remarks.

Just out of curiosity, you know what Quigg was paid?

TBH, I don't think Jack is underpaid..

Davis was paid $75,000 for his win vs. Pedraza, but again, that was his very first world title challenge and it seems like a 75-25 split as Pedraza recieved $225,000

Prescient remarks Verlichte... De La Hoya is about as philanthropist as Scrooge. I had to LOL at his 2-faced self-congratulatory palavering.

And Dulorme is not the first but I don't feel like looking up stuff for you. I don't see how any of this is surprising to anyone. Can you imagine anyone getting more money than Floyd in any transaction? Badou Jack just had enough money to buy himself a house and he's been in big fights for the last few years for Floyd.

• Didn’t Thomas Dulorme earn $110K to face a lightly-regarded fighter like Henry Lundy? He would have earned far more when he faced Terence Crawford for the WBO world title.
• Isn’t Orlando Salido an Uber driver, even though he holds a victory over Vasyl Lomachenko?
• Don’t a lot of non-world class fighters have separate jobs in order to help pay the bills (i.e. even a multiple-weight world champion like Ricky Burns was a part-time employee for a long-time in a sports shop)?
• Hasn’t Thomas Dulorme only competed twice in more than two years?

A couple of other points to consider:
• TMZ didn’t provide TMT’s side of the story
• TMZ aren’t exactly a reputable news source (i.e. they reported that Mayweather had orchestrated a savage attack on two of his employees he suspected of stealing his jewellery, but the story was subsequently proven to be utter fúckíng búllshít)

Like I said before, I’m not saying you’re wrong and nor am I trying to engage in an argument, but if you delve deeper into Dulorme’s background, the fact that he needs to hold a job to pay the bills doesn’t appear to be so unreasonable.

In regards to Badou Jack, he's earned quite a lot of money, so I don't feel sorry for him. I would have liked to have earned more than $2m over the last couple of years. :o

Finally, in relation to Badou Jack being underpaid for individual fights, the evidence is clearly lacking, since he commanded pretty much the same purses as his opponents did when he fought the likes of George Groves and James DeGale.

Therefore, I still don’t understand the justification for your allegation about Floyd Mayweather Jr. underpaying his fighters. I’d need to see more evidence of this, since there superficially doesn't appear to be any.

Badou Jack is a good fighter without much of a name. Arguably $700k would be acceptable for him in that spot. DeGale probably should've got closer to $800 or $850, but... close enough. If DeGale was fighting an opponent with more name recognition and/or a British opponent, he could've been making over $1 million. Groves rematch or Eubank could probably make him $1.1 - 1.5 million.

Your comparison to Frampton is odd, and the way you word it to sound like Frampton's purse should be expected to be low. He's a fighter of low weight, but like... Frampton - Santa Cruz was an action-packed rematch between a top 10 p4p British fighter and a top 20 p4p Mexican fighter. Everything other than the weight implies lots of money.
