Jesse had a very good lest hook which made him dangerous. He was a good prospect until his loss to contender Carl Williams. In that fight Fergsuon was winn ing the fight,. until Williams scored the come from behind TKo in I belive the 10th. He was never the same fighter after this loss His next big fight was against Tyson in What was billed as Tysons toughest fight to date and was nationally teliviesed here in America on ABC. Ferguson went into survival mode and held whenever Tyson got close. It was similar to the Bonecrusher Smith fight. Tyson really nailed him in the 5th and Feguson showed alot of heart surving before being DQ'd in the 6th for holding. The ref could have stopped it by TKO at this point as Ferguson legs were gone at that point, and Tyson was teeing off\
Afterward Tyson became fodder for prospects and contenders, before scoring an upsed win over WBA # 1 contender Ray Mercer on the undercard of Bowe Dokes at MSG. It is believed that Mercer tried to bribe Ferguson to lay down during the fight, when it was clear he was going to lose. This ruined the plan to match Mercer with Bowe, aqnd Ferguson got the shot despite his poor record, and he was stopped in 2. Ferguson had a rematch with Mercer on PPV, after their controversial first fight. He was stopped by Frank Bruno, in a remeember picking Ferguson to win in an upset. Bruno k'o'd him in 2 and completly took Jesse out of contention
In 96-97 Ferguson enjoyed a revival by beating some up and coming heaveyweights, and established himself as a gatekeeper in the division
Overall despite his poor record, I saw Fergson as a dangerous fighter. While he only had 16 Ko's he had good one punch power, but I ofter thought he was a poor finisher, because it seemed to me he would pace himself when his opponent was hurt, perhaps he lacked confidence in his conditioning. He also had alot of heart. A year ago he was talking about a comeback, but I'm glad that he has not actually had any fight.

Thanks thehero55. Was Jesse Ferguson's best win was really beating Ray Mercer in the first match or beating the future world heavyweight champion James "Buster" Douglas? Ferguson also fought the legendary Larry Holmes whom he beat Ferguson easily by decision.

I would say the Mercer win was a bigger win. When Ferguson beat Douglas he had already been beaten by David Bey and Mike White neither of whom were bigtime fighters. Douglas was not considered a serious contender when the two fought. Ferguson was a prospect and was expected to win. If anything the fact that it was a close fight was a surprise at the time. Mercer was as I said the #1 contender. This was the second time he had been one fight away from a world title shot. He lost his shot againt Holyfield by losing on points to Larry Holmes. However Mercer was still considered a very serious contender and the win was a huge upset. While Douglas would become a world champ and Mercer wouldn't the Mercerr of 1993 was clearly better than the Buster Douglas of 85. Also Fergosuon was the first of Alex Stewarts 41 opponents to that point that Stewart beat by decision.
