Injuries that ended bouts

The Kell Brook fight on saturday, and the associated 'abuse' he has had to put up with, people questioning his will and his heart, all unfair in my opinion, has made me think of other boxers that have seemingly withdrawn themselves from bouts at high cost.

Vitali did not continue against Byrdd after a rotator cuff injury

Any others?

Did these fighters receive the crap that kell is receiving?

In my opinion an eye injury (not just a cut) can have life changing consequences. kell was correct to preserve himself for another day.

Genaro Hernandez after Oscar De La Hoya shattered his nose. Personally I would rather a fighter live to fight another day, I'm not in his shoes and won't condemn someone that feels they can't carry on due to injury.

Ortiz got slaughtered worse than brook for quitting against maidana,he wasnt labelled courageous or a warrior,he was labelled a quitter same as vitali vs byrd. People are getting touchy about brook being labelled a quitter because brook is british and we have all watched his career from virtually day dot. Its a difference of opinion, not everyone will think the same

Remember Cook pulling out against Burns with a back problem. Barker against Sturm. Dave Ryan against Hibbert in the third fight which he was winning.

Tzsyu quit on his stool against Hatton but that wasn't anything specific. I think he was just fukked and had had enough. Can't remember. DeLa Hoya against Pac did the same.

Most famous of all Duran vs Leonard, which makes any criticism Brook is receiving seem irrelevant.

Duran vs Pat Lawlor too, though by then Duran was so old nobody cared.

Bobby Czyz vs Holyfield. His corner couldn't decide whether it was his back or his eyes, but was going to lose anyway.

Most farcically old Bonecrusher Smith dislocating his shoulder throwing a punch against the even older Joe Bugner.

Cotto v Margarito. No injury as such, just a plaster fisted assault.

Barker was pretty bad. No way did he not know about that injury going in to the fight. Ok he was well paid, but fans paid hard earned coin to go out there and watch him.

tsyu against Hatton was quitting plain and simple.

Martin against Joshua. He missed the count on purpose.

The worst I have seen was Briggs v Green ( Australians) Green never touched him and briggs stayed down after about 20 seconds of round one.

Not injuries per se, but quitting.

Vitali got absolutely slaughtered for pulling out against Byrd, especially by Americans.

It was only after he showed enormous heart VS Lennox that people dropped the 'quitter' tag.

'Heart' in boxing is an odd concept - for example Nigel Benn showed immense heart against McLennan and Eubank, the former was one of the bravest performances ever. Yet one could argue he quit against Collins and fell over from a jab against Watson.

Duran quit against Leonard even through he was a warrior.

With regards to Kell, I think he'd absolutely shot his bolt after a good start, and with the eye he felt discretion was the best part of valour.... but he did quit nonetheless, and I genuinely believe it's part of today's more gentle 'touchy feely' culture that people are being gentle with him. Which I'm not disagreeing with - however boxing fans of the past would hammer him.

my issue is that eye damage can be lifechanging...shoulders, backs etc wont be.

maybe dom would have pulled him out anyway, it looked like Kell had thrown his 'last hurrah' flurry in round 10 and spence was still stood there.

Are there any instance of anyone losing their sight after a boxing match?

Sonny Liston claimed an arm injury against Cassius Clay.

Henry Cooper any number of bouts through bleeding - most famously Cassius Clay.

Jimmy Britt quits vs Joe Gans with broken wrist.

Georges Carpentier wouldn't come out for 15th vs Gene Tunney due to knee inflicted testicular injury.

Schmeling declined to continue after teste injury vs Sharkey - and was awarded heavyweight crown.

Marcel Cerdan pulls out with dislocated shoulder vs Jake Lamotta.

Willie Pep quit with same injury against Sandy Saddler.

On the other side: Jim Jeffries and Rocky Marciano both reversed fights with Bob Fitzsimmons and Ezard Charles respectively in spite of their mangled faces hanging off their heads.

Tommy Morrison poleaxed Joe Hipp with a broken jaw and 2 broken hands.

Danny Williams had his glorious performance vs Mark Potter.

Jack Johnson retained his title vs 6' 6" Battling Jim Johnson in spite of breaking his arm in the 2nd.

ALSO: Referee Ed Purdy went 15 officiating Greb/Walker with a dislocated knee suffered when Greb floored him!

I think both John Murray and Lee Purdy have eye problems (if not loss of sight in one eye).
