David Allen: Last chance with Hearn

David Allen vowed to take advantage of a 'last chance' from promoter Eddie Hearn after suffering defeat in his Commonwealth title fight with Lenroy Thomas.

The Doncaster heavyweight was on the receiving end of heated words from Hearn in the aftermath of his split decision defeat to Thomas last Saturday, with two judges awarding victory to the Jamaican by a single point at Bramall Lane.

Allen admits his promising career cannot afford another setback following previous losses to Dillian Whyte and Luis Ortiz, but he remains determined to repay the faith shown in him.

"I think Eddie just wants me to give 100 per cent, simple as that," Allen told Sky Sports. "Probably yes, it is probably my last chance with Eddie Hearn, but this is the only chance that I feel like I'm going to need, because it's definitely coming.

"A couple of wins and I'm straight back in the title scene."

The 25-year-old received criticism from Hearn for leaving his hotel to meet fans on the day of the fight, although Allen insists he only intended to thank his growing support.

"I don't disagree with 99 per cent of what he said," said 'The White Rhino.' "He said he will still back me, we'll go again, and that's the main thing.

"He wasn't happy with me going out and seeing people on the day of the fight, but people travelled hundreds of miles from all over the country. They have been giving me unbelievable support and I wanted to give it back. For me, it felt like the right thing to do.

"Next time, Eddie is the man, he's given me the opportunities, and I'll do it his way. I've got to look at the likes of Anthony Joshua and Wladimir Klitschko and conduct myself in the same manner - in and out of the gym."

Allen hopes to fight a six-rounder within the next few weeks, away from the television cameras, and still wants a domestic clash with Ian Lewson in the future.

"We're just looking to get out and get a win," said Allen. "It was a hard 12-rounder, very physical. I'm still a bit sore but I don't want to mess about. I need to keep in the gym. I need to get a date to keep my mind on the job.

"I've come up short on three occasions, but it's all going to be worth it because one day I will lift the British title."

If Hearn ditches him W@rren will pick him up.
Allens got banter and he shifts tickets. Be a nice name for Dubois to take in a few fights time...

That's it. He's basically area title level though (even though he's tough as nails.)

I don't know what Hearn is expecting. Allen is extremely limited and did his best against Thomas.

He could maybe get his hands on a British title if he's matched properly. Ffs we nearly had Cornish v Sexton for the vacant title.

He's definitely limited but I can't help but like him and want to see him get a bit of success.

He can improve given his age and experience and get fitter. Long term I just hope he doesn't take too much punishment so that he can pursue his true talent which I think would be boxing punditry/commentary.

Hearn was very damning on his IFL interview. I don't think he expects Allen to be a world beater, but he does expect him to act like a professional, which is fair enough imo.

I got he feeling Hearn thinks Allen is better than that showing.

He's absolutely not. He's been performing like that his whole career.

Dave's got to get his serious head on now.

Stop all the IFL interviews, playing table tennis hours before fight and going out greeting people hours before fight.

He didn't look focused enough to me against Lenroy.

In saying that though, I think he could've had another couple of wins before going for the Commonwealth title. He fought a couple of plumbers in a week then Lenroy. Needs more shape and fitness, and a bit more confidence in his ability.

I went to the Haye v Bellew weigh in and got to chat with Dave. Great chap and very friendly. However I was a little perturbed to see him coming out of Nandos with (what looked to be) a group of fans several hours after the weigh in.

Gone too his head the fame. No ego, just loves the attention.

I wanna see abs on you Dave.

I agree. His biggest strength is that he takes a beating well.

In terms of actually winning fights, there aren't many tools there. He's a bit Homer Simpson-ish...

They need to match him against Boxcar Joe, Boxcar Willy and Boxcar Sam to build him up a little then.

I think if Allen wins the English title then he should be pleased with that, I don't really see him progressing much further. Allen vs. Lewinson for that strap makes sense...

At least he's getting known and he's with Hearn. I'm sure that will make him a few quid, best of luck to him

Not sure why he just bulldozes and then smothers his own work. Maybe being used as a sparring partner so much he was always inferior in terms of jab, and general boxing skills so that was his only option

Dave is ridiculously tough and gets by on that. He could probably go out every night and still do twelve rounds with most top heavyweights.

yes but he was fading at the end of the Thomas fight and it was that poor last round that lost him the fight. As such he needs to be fitter.

Had a debate with stefy bull last year he thinks hes got the tools to win a British i just cant seen like people have said he is only central area level imo i agree he should be happy if he can pick up an english title i follow him on twitter and he seems to be on there constantly fair enough social media is what as got him these chances but sitting on there making fans wont take him were he wants to be in the ring i am afraid he really needs to knuckle down and give his all

Well who are the guys at British level now. Aren't Cornish and Sexton about to contest the british title? Allen is poor and he would be the underdog but he's got some chance against them. Dubois would cause harm to Allen though.

Allen would stand a good chance against Cornish and Sexton but Gorman and Lewison are probably too good for him.

Dave Allen's opportunity may have passed him by. Won't be an easier opponent than Cornish for the British.

No, the right thing to do would have been to train hard and focus on delivering a great performance in the ring.
