In his first bout of the L.A. games, against South Korea's Kim Kwang-Sun, he suffered three broken bones in his right hand. In his second match, against William Boganzo of Uganda, he dislocated his right elbow and shoulder. He broke a toe while jogging before he fought Great Britain's Jim Lyon.

In his gold medal bout, he finally received a lucky break . . . literally.

Gonzales was scheduled to fight Salvatore Todisco of Italy, but Todisco's hand was in a cast, because of a broken thumb suffered in a semifinal bout.

Gonzalez was very injury-prone (he licked Orlando Canizales as a pro but injuries prevented him from getting anywhere) - but I'm not sure about his Olympic injuries. The writer calls the legendary John Lyon, a man who has won more ABA titles than any man in history, JIM, which kind of speaks for itself.

Hmmm yes that was a bit of a clanger. At first I was thinking who the hell is Jim Lyon?? Nice story if it's true though.
Gonzalez was an excellent boxer, just had no punch on him.

Yes, he won the Val Barker award at those games and scored a magnificent win over the rugged Korean Kwang-Sun Kim.
I notice he's no fan of Oscar de la Hoya!
