Anyone remember the fun couple of fights Shane McPhilbin had a few years back when he beat Leon Williams for the British Cruiserweight title (who had narrowly beaten Rob Norton in a fight that started slow but finished well).

McPhilbin, who had moved down from heavyweight with a 5-2 record, got absolutely battered by Williams early on, getting decked in the 1st round & again in the 6th but just taking a proper pasting all the way through while barely landing a punch.

But he kept on coming like Frankensteins monster and Williams got knackered from beating him up. McPhilbin, whose nickname was Mr Block from a childhood nickname of Blockhead, eventually won with a last round stoppage.

He then went up against Enzo Maccarinelli in front of his home town fans and had Enzo f*cked up in the first round & somehow the bell rang almost a minute early saving the name fighter. He had Macca down again but the better man came back to deck him & win on points.

But it just makes me wonder what Mr Block could have done if the Enzo fight had ended by KO in the first round. He would have been 9(6)-2 with 1 of those losses being a Prizefighter bout against Sprott. He was only 26 at the time too. He ended up with a 8-9-1 record.

I ain't saying he would have gone on to win multiple titles (he fought like Deontay Wilder ) but it's these little events that can change a mans life.

I was with him a couple of weeks ago. He's still mental. He's planning on opening a gym and getting his pro trainers license.

Personally I thought McPhilbin was awful. He done fantastically well to achieve what he did and was robbed against Enzo the first time. He was a hardy fukker though

I was at the Williams - I left after round 11 with some other folks as it seemed a foregone conclusion.

Yeah remember it being really bad I got let off work early it was that bad which was a bonus as I got in the pub earlier, lucky for me Walsall is pretty much one straight main road from me so taxi got us there sound but remember it was carnage down side roads

Can't see that the Maccarinelli fight was swept under the carpet - the timekeeper was suspended for a long time.

The Laing fight was different - it was against Patrizio Oliva, and was the opposite issue. The timekeeper stopped the clock every time the referee broke the action, so many rounds were over 3 mins and the last was over four and a half, from memory. While the UK footage didn't show that, the Italian footage did on the live clock on screen (and quite how the ringside timekeeper's clock was on Italian TV, goodness only knows). Geekily, I sat there with a stopwatch timing each round some years back. Accuracy and all that.

Finally, in hindsight, I nearly prevented McPhilbin's rise to British champion without realising it. When he won the Area tite, against Rhys Davies at Bedworth Civic, there were some disturbances in the crowd from shortly into round 1, and I was the Area Rep. I waited a round or two to see if it would settle, but things were still not great. So I went over to the timekeeper shortly after the start of round 3 to ask him to appeal at the end of the round for calm, otherwise the fight would be stopped. However, as he and I were talking, McPhilbin knocked down Davies and stopped him moments later. Pretty timely.

Takes me back to the pre Ifilm days that, seeing Jane Couch doing the interviews. I remember her interviewing a fresh faced Tyson Fury in a pony and trap. She could be annoying but I was quite fond of her, really. I walked past her at a show once and was surprised that she wasn't a great big bird. I thought she was going to be built like a fella for some reason.

She used to post on here, too.

Are there actually any women that post on this forum at all, now? I suppose we had Katie Taylor very briefly.

We were all nice to Katie and all wanted to munch her. Why has she gone? I bet Smigga has grabbed her at a show and told her we'd ruin her personality.

I didn't get my car off the drive. Tried to book travel lodge and a taxi but was quoted stupid prices ended up watching it at home.
