some do. some make it to florida or somewhere similar. claim asylum or defect. not many though. cuban amateur boxers if succesful are treated like gods. they can have amazing luxurious lifestyles (by cuban standards). guys like felix savon, tefelio stevenson etc. it was reported that felix savon turned down an offer near 25m dollars by don king to fight tyson. that goes to show the traditions they feel they are upholding by staying true to the 'amateur' game in cuba.

aspiring boxers are taught almost militarily, sent to camps etc if they show great promise.

oh and castro banned pro boxing in 1961.

if your interested theres a xracking book by john duncan about amateur boxing in cuba called 'in the red corner'

ive often toyed with the idea of going to live in cuba at some point. flog the flat, pay off debts, other exes.should leave me with around 40 000 to play with. mate of mine just come back not too long ago said it would be possibly to live very well for that amount of money for a year or two as long as one doesnt get to excessive.

It's a shame....i'm sure top 100 lists of greatest pro boxers of all time would look a lot different if Cuban's turned pro.

Joel Casamayor is not a popular Cuban, one old man spat on the floor when i mentioned his name. As for moving there neil, you have to go through a lot of bartering with Fidel to own property there mate, even the nationals property is government part owned.

Cubans are restricted from leaving the country and have to apply to own a passport, when they do apply they go through a costly and strenuous process and are 9 times out of 10 rejected and never refunded. Hence the quick exits and crazy swims to Florida

Also showed how the young see themselves, far from the repressed youth they would be expected to be, they were very knowledgeable of the outside world.

I saw a picture recently (may have been a link from on eof these topics) featuring Muhammed Ali "sparring" against either Felix Savon or Teofilo Stevenson. It might have just been a promotional thing. Can anyone here taell me more about it?

Surprisingly Fidel is very shit hot on education for all, all schooling from primary to university is free and there are better percentage rates of doctors and nurses to patients than over here...here is 500 or so patients to a doctor, over there 140 patients to a doctor. Despite there hardships they are a very friendly and knowledgable nation of people...Savon turned down £10,000,000 for a big USA superfight to stay in Cuba where he now trains amateurs for £12 a month :(

The documentary is "Boxeo Cuban" produced by sabotage films I believe and it was screened on the discovery channel. I agree, very good viewing.
