Two-division World Boxing Association (WBA) World Champion Beibut Shumenov has relinquished his WBA cruiserweight world title, due to his career-ending eye injury, and he has announced his retirement from the ring.

"I have regrettably relinquished my WBA cruiserweight title and retired from boxing because of a traumatic eye injury suffered the week before my last scheduled fight," Shumenov said from his Las Vegas home. "I'm extremely disappointed my boxing career has ended like this but, unfortunately, injuries are part of this sport and there's nothing I can do about it. I still have blurred vision and I need to have an additional surgery next month to try to further repair so I don't risk blindness in my (right) eye.

"I'd like to thank my family, my team throughout the years, friends and fans for their continued support all these years. I was proud to wear the WBA championship belt for many years as a two-division champion. I'm grateful to WBA President Gilberto Jesus Mendoza, his father, and all those in my WBA family. It was quite a ride and I look forward with great anticipation to the next chapter of my life with my son and future endeavors."

I'll remember him best for beating B.J. Flores and getting a decision he didn't deserve against Campillo. Awkward fighter that wasn't particularly entertaining to watch, but did pretty damn well considering he was his own trainer.

I think he was well off before getting involved in Boxing so he should be fine. Good luck to him.

Sad we never got to see a lightheavy unification with Clev (who mentioned it after every defence he made of his WBO title)

What's sad about it? I couldn't care less that a fight between Shumenov and Cleverly never happened.

Shumenov has never been a top fighter. All he achieved was due to favors from WBA. I won't miss him.

Can someone tell me which fight it was where he had no cornermen?

Always a shame when a boxer has to retire due to injury, best of luck to him in the future.

No, I've not seen all his fights, but he had cornermen for Hopkins. I think what the dude means is in a fight he might've literally had no cutmen men his corner. Sounds insane, but I'd believe it considering it's Shumenov.

As I said, it would be super crazy. Shumenov is a weird dude, though.

Yeah and Cleverly only wanted it because it was the only guy in the world with a belt he could actually beat

He may have had cornermen, but he never had a trainer. I seen it on a youtube video by Hancho
Boxing of the most bizzare boxing moments. But they never mentioned his opponent.

I agree with that... Judges were paid off against Campillo because nobody comes up with scores like that, which were not reflecting reality.. Both Cleverly and Hopkins were targeting Shumenov... Hopkins finally got him at age 49 -- and easily got the record for "oldest boxer to unify titles."

Shumenov had no skills whatever. He was the most pathetic "World Champion" I've ever seen.

It won't be a great loss since he never was a superb boxer and never won great opponents to be recognized as a top fighter, just a few average ones. I won't miss.

He didn't beat Campillo. He ran the whole fight against Flores not landing anything significant, and I think that his "win" was another gift.

Very gifted fighter. I remember though how respectable the start of his career was, somewhat of a forerunner to today's amateur standouts challenging themselves early on as a pro, then Campillo was too steep of a challenge and that was about it.
