This might have been done before actually. Best boxing and other sports commentary moments?

A personal favourite of mine is from the 1987 Tour de France. Ireland's Stephen Roche was having a fornicating great race but had been dropped by Delgado and Chiapucci (I think) on Alpe D'Huez. Left for dead (not literally).

Anyway, they are about to cross the line and a shadow appears about 50 yards away round the corner behind them. The TV had done fornicate all but follow the front two for ages so we had seen nothing else. C4's Phil Liggett said something like "And who's that? (Bewildered)...It looks like Stephen Roche...(realisation) IT'S STEPHEN ROCHE!" cue mayhem.

The hard bastard had got a second wind and almost caught them, on his own, on one of the hardest parts of perhaps the hardest sporting event.

He collapsed on the line, oxygen mask the lot. Chilling.

Didn't know about that as I only followed cycling from about 1994. Wish I'd seen it. Alpe D'Huez is the hardest climb of the tour isn't it? Can't believe they had a time trial up there this year.

I love the commentary for Michael Johnson's 200m world record, by David Coleman. It's one of my favourite sporting moments of all time so i suppose that has a lot to do with it. Coleman goes "It's Johnson...Johnson by YARDS!", it's the way he says it...shiver everytime i see/hear it. quality.

Not a big Martin Tyler fan, but his 'Would you believe it!?!" after Tony Adams scored against Everton when we secured the championship back in 98...that was classic.

I know it's going back a bit, but if you like athletics, you need to hear the commentary on Billy Mills' amazing win in the 10,000m at the 64 Olympics. The American commentary, I mean.

Mills, a native American, was given no chance and sprinted from miles behind to win.

There was that Norwegian commentator when they beat England who went on about "Maggie Thatcher... Winston Churchill...Francis Drake...Lord Nelson etc etc where are you? your boys took a hell of a beating"

I thought Steve Cram displaying bias in the men's 1,500 metres this year was also great. "Come on El Garroug".

I can't remember the exact quote, but who remembers the UK version of Leonard vs Hearns II when one of the commentators (it might have been old Reg) say something like "I'm witnessing Bambi being mugged".

Watch the fight again though and its alot closer than you originally thought.

Linford winning the gold in Barcelona was pretty good. As was the sky commentary for Beckham's free kick against the Greeks. Something like "For certain players you feel there are moments of destiny", Martin Tyler would have looked like a right tit had it not gone in.

I think BD is also resposible for the "Fashanu...oh!...OH, WHAT A GOAL!!" work of genius.

some of the commentary in the olympics this year has been funny.
The cyclist commentator, literally doesn't take a breath. He keeps on going, and starts to run out of things to say so he either repeats himself or goes off subject slightly.

The sailing one has to do a summary of the day's events cos it's so boring to watch live. He talks as if the story he is telling of the race is in fact a thriller...he tries to make it as tense as possible..fair play but it's quite funny.

The rowing commentator just creams himself every race involving a brit. It's his moment, once every 4 years and he makes the most of it. There's the female scottish co-commentator who is always about to burst into tears.

Yonks ago I remember watching the Wimbledon tennis while I was in the US. Commentators were basically describing every shot to the level of perspicacity of 'Forehand by Connors, he runs forwards, backhand by McEnroe, out to the right of the court, backhand return by Connors,' etc. They just didn't shut up. Then they had a 'special feature' where they passed over to 'Our British colleagues' and the BBC team. Huge rally ensued, and Maskell, I think it was, said absolutely nothing until the very end, then he piped up with, 'Wonderful tennis.'

Great stuff.

Yes, Maskell was great. The Yanks just can't shut up. Why do you need to describe all the shots you can see. OK, comment on the quality of a shot or its results but the other stuff is for radio.
