Interesting. Ali's brother changed his name and became a muslim as well?
It looks like he was a decent fighter, was unbeaten before that four-year lay-off, and was presumably past his prime for his losses.

If you look at his record his debut was on the first Ali-Liston undercard which also feature a young Bob Foster

I may be wrong here but I am sure Rahman Ali was introduced to the Nation Of Islam before Muhammad and encouraged his brother to attend thier meetings etc.
I also read that Muhammad for the Olympics competed at Light-Heavyweight to allow his brother to try out for the games at Heavyweight. Can anyone confirm this?

He was also on the undercard of The Fight of the Century, Ali-Frazier I.
Where he suffered his first loss...a bad night for the Ali brothers...
Anybody know what he's doing these days???

The fact he had a brother who was a boxer comes as a bit of news to me. as they say you learn something new each day.
what is he doing at present?
hope he is in better health than Ali, which I find very sad as i think he was one of the best boxers ever and often think that had he stopped sooner he would be in far better health than he is today.
In some respects the same could be said of tyson ?

.....i don't remember if it was an amateur or pro fight...it was a long time ago.....but i recall reading...when the brothers were still using the name clay....about a fight where rudy was on the canvas and "cassius" was at ringside yelling...."get up...get up...you're a clay!!!"

You guys should read Norman Mailer's Ali biography. Very interesting book, consisting of interviews with some Ali's friends, relatives, family, ex wives, etc.
In that book it's also mentioned that Rahman Ali was the one who first joined the brotherhood of Nation of Islam, which then encouraged Muhammad join that group.
As far as I know there are many variations of Rahman Ali's name: Rahaman Ali or Rahman Ali. How about his birth name? Rudolph Clay?

Out of topic: How about Michael Jackson's involment with NOI? I read in a newspaper some months ago, Jacko turned to Muslim and joined NOI. But so far no confirmation from Jacko.

...if von clay is ali's brother it's news to me...and probably a shock to ali . i'm sure he's no relation.
i remember him. he came along when new fighters were being rushed to take the place of the veterans who were getting a little long in the tooth inside the mouthguard.
an aggressive kayo puncher.
he was thrown in against harold johnson when he (clay) had less than 20 fights...which in that day made him a novice...and putting him in against johnson was equivalent to tying his hands and knees and asking him to swim acorss the potomac.
he went right after johnson..at which johnson was both surprised and even amused at the effrontery. "18 fights and he comes out right to me. to me!! slugging! were johnson's words as well as i can recall them. harold kayoed him in the third and clay started a decline and finally quit the ring. hve no idea what happened to him after than.

Are you sure? I remember when Von was brought to Lima to fight Mauro Mina, he was billed as Cassius' brother (or half-brother?). I suppose it may have been a promotional ploy, but years later I spoke with someone who knew Ali personally, and when we talked about Mina, he immediately recalled that he had fought Ali's btother.

rafael...no, i'm not sure. if it's true i'm just surprised it isn't more widely known. surely with all the ali biographies around there must be some reference somewhere. i have a few books on ali myself, though i must confess i haven't dug all the way into them. i'll concede ali's place as an alltime great....but i found him a most boring personality way back when he said "moore will go in four"....the act got so tiresome so quickly. now i guess i'll have to get into my library and see what i can find.

...well, i just checked the thomas hauser bio and there's no von clay in the index...and i looked at ali's own autobio..the greatest...which doesn't have an index and there's no way i'm going to dig any further into that one. when i started to read it years ago i got so distracted by counting the number of times the pronouns "I" and "me" were used i forgot everything else. i suspect von was using the alleged relationship as a publicity ploy. if he was a brother i'm sure someone will come up with some reliable data here before long.

Hell, that's why I liked him & got interested in him...back then, it was something
different, interesting, unique, colorful....the original 'trash talker'...although quite tame by today's standards...

This is news to me to.
Maybe it was a bit of a promotional trick or just alleged by Von Clay like Cliff Couser does with Mike Tyson.

The Von Clay thing was strictly promotional....No relation at all.
Rudolph Valentino Clay was a decent but not exceptional amateur who turned pro in the Liston-Clay undercard against a fair club fighter named Chip Johnson. He did okay and was flattened like a pancake by 6'6' Jack OHalloran, who later became a movie actor.
Rudy/Rahman lives in Louisville and is involved in amateur boxing training last I heard.

i keep meaning to do a post about the guy from my hometown of edinburgh who went to New york and fought Alis brother on the undercard of the ali frazier fight in 1971. he's called Danny MaAlinden. he lives about 300 yards fom me. ill get back to you!

infact since ive got time, ill do it now.
Danny McAlinden billed himslef as the "coventry Irishman", due o the fact he was born in Northern Ireland. However he came o Edinburgh at an extrememly young age and grew up in Gorgie or more specifically, Wardlaw Place.
As he grew up his constant companion was an alsation namd 'dante', those who knew him reckoned he got his combatitive breeding by wrestling this dog!
By all accounts his style of fighting on the night of the 8th March 1971 at Madison Square Garden varied little from these canine bouts!
For the record McAlinden beat Alis brother on points after six rounds. He was British Heavyweight champ beating Jack Bodell in 1972, a title he lost some 3 years later to Bunny Sterling. He did however go on to win the Irish heavyweight title in 1979, finally finishing up with a record of 31-12-2

Neil, how is Danny these days. The last thing I heard about him he was arrested for fighting in an Indian Take-Away about 7/8 years ago.
I heard that after he retired he was working as a Doorman, I'm sure I read he may have been stabbed at some point.
I also recall in the mid 1980's there was talk of him fighting on an unlicenced card against the late Lenny McClean, but that was just talk I believe.
I have highlights of his fight with Jack Bowdell, which was a real free for all slugfest whilst it lasted.

to be honest joe ive never actually met the guy. i could recall reading about his fight with rachman ali in brian donalds book "the fight game in scotland" a few years back now and became very interested in him due to the local interest angle. i live a few hundred yards away from where he used to stay. his name popped up in another book i recently read and he came to mind when i noticed the title of this thread, and always being one to push the merits of the scottish fighters i thought id post the tale.
i ran a search for him online and as far as i can make our he's involved in amateur boxing in coventry, but i could find out nothing else
would be interested in finding out more though. would i be right in saying he won a commonwealth bronze medal for northern ireland in the 1966 games too?
