The 'Long Count' Colorized

If you have the opportunity check out America in Color, 1920s (Smithsonian Channel) - the slow motion colorized clip they have of Dempsey-Tunney II is the best (clearest) image I have ever seen. You can see the punches clearly and evaluate their impact, and you can read Tunney's face when he is down.

The KD looks to be just a one punch KD (a hook) - he throws four punches in the combination, but only the hook lands cleanly, with any power, (an again, the clarity of the image when Tunney takes the hook is unprecedented) Dempsey does land another right just as Tunney's is going down, but for the first time now I can see that that punch is more push than punch. Had Dempsey been in position to follow through on this final right I doubt Tunney would have gotten up.

You also can see for the first time how strong Dempsey looks; Dempsey looks much stronger (build wise) than Tunney. We have always been able to see Dempsey's strength in still photos, but in the old black and white fight films Dempsey's physique seems to get lost. This colorization really brings out the detail of his physique (I wonder if it isn't computer enhanced as well). I have never been a fan of colorization, but this clip just might change my mind.

Check it out and see what you think; it really is like seeing the KD for the first time.

P.S. They also must have zoomed in on the action somehow; you feel much closer to the fighters than you do in the traditional B&W clip (we have all watched a hundred times.) I am telling ya, it is worth the watch, go out of your way to see it.

So what is the source of this clip that the Smithsonian percured ? and why did they decide to colorized it ?

Documentary on American history - America in Color, 1920s - check you local listing as we use to say - there is one for each decade, all week long, - can't wait to see what they do with some Louis clips.

The whole computerized/colorizing process took a big step forward with this effort; no one before has offered such quality images.

With that said, their Dempsey-Fripo clip was not as good as their Dempsey-Tunney II clip, but still better than anything I have ever encountered. We all know from experience that the B&W Dempsey-Tunney II clip was already superior to the Fripo film, so I guess they could do more with it.

As far as the clip goes, I am guessing they took the classic clip we have all seen many times and computerized the hell out of it. It is very clear, the colorization looks real, profound detail - and as I said above, they figured out some way to zoom in on the action and yet maintain the clarity.

Too bad they didn't start with the 1910s (they didn't) - we could have finally had a clear view of the Johnson-Willard fight, the punch vs. non-punch argument could have been laid to rest for good (maybe). - Na, never mind, unless someone hunts down and kills Kalan, that argument will never end.

Man,i can't watch that.
Because I cut my cable off a few years ago out of protest, because I refused to be even be partly responsible for help paying that idiot Bill Mahr's
paycheck for his stooppid show on HBO from my cable bill.
BTW are you sure that it wasnt really actual two-strip Technicolor footage filmed of Tunney vrs Dempsey ?

I saw a real old horror film about 10 years ago entitled MYSTERY OF THE WAX MUSEUM.
It was made in 1933 and was filmed in some early primitive colour process.
did the 1927 footage resemble this here ?

hey AlPerno,I just bet what you saw was probably footage of a recently discovered print of Tunney vrs Dempsey II
that was originally filmed in the "Two-Color Techicolour Strip Process" ?
(which was invented in the early 1920's)

Thank you for the post - Do you know what this footage is? Is this colorized - it looks it to me?. This is not the two-color strip the Barbarian is mentioning above.

Because the above Dempsey clip has so many locations, spread over several years (from Carpentier to Fripo to Tunney) I think it is colorized, not two-color strip.

You let Bill Mahr decide what you watch? - He ain't going anywhere, HBO ain't going anywhere - and you don't have cable. All politics is annoying but I try to never let it interfere with my pleasures. - Wait how can Fox News lie to you if you don't have cable? ;-)

That's right it's colourised, the description says it's by a company called Composite Films.

of old black and white films on the Ted Turner Network, and how crude it looked back then ?

Yea that's why I was so surprised when I saw how well this footage turned out - this entire American History series is colorized and worth a watch - it will show up on the Internet eventually: America in Color Smithsonian Channel - and like I said above I am excited to see what they can do with some of Louis' film clips. 1930s B&W film is a generation better than 1920's film.

The 1930s is scheduled for next week.

actually there does exist some brief colour footage of Joe Louis when he was still Heavyweight Champion in the ring doing a sort of exhibition /sparring I guess.
I did a thread on it some 5 years ago.
It was unusual just to see it in technicolour, you could even see some hairs on his chest.
can you guess the source it came from ?

I'm sorry, the hairs on his chest or the fight film? - They filmed some WWII footage in color, Army Signal Corp? - If you meant the hair, I'll go with 'follicles.'

as men age they grow a bit of hair on their chest.
I remember Muhammad Ali had some sparse hair on his chest when he was in his 30's.
( that was around the time he grew a mustache too)

BTW when I first saw that colourized image of Jack Dempsey there,
my first thought was Damn !
where on earth in this day and age did they find an actor who looks like that
to play him in a new Bio-pic in production ?
Because most Hollywood actors over the last 25 years look like a bunch of limp wristed high strung metro-sexuals.
turns out the photo really is of the real Manna Mauler of course.

I will give the answer (and the link if it still exists on youtube) here tomorrow.
( although I couldn't prevent anyone from doing it in the meantime of course)

I have disliked the colorization of black-and-white films since it started to be done on a large scale during the 1980s. The black-and-white films generally are fine as is.
