Gilberto Ramirez to finally face a big size guy...

Gilberto "Zurdo" Ramirez, whom I consider a big guy for Super Middleweight, is set to face undefeated and bigger sized Jesse Hart. With this scheduled bout, Zurdo seem to show having guts because he will face his second bigger and better technically opponent since Maksim Vlasov in 35 bouts. Aleluiah!

I don't think he would have joined it anyway, but I wouldn't be too motivated to join the group that is in the 168lb tourney. None of those are big fights. To be tied up in that for the next year and a half would not help his career at all.

I would rather see him fight degale once he gets healthy.

I won't be surprised in hart beats him though.

Apart from chunky, and maybe Dirrell, he won't get much better opponents outside the tournament. Throw into the fact that chunky injured so nothing happening too soon with him.

Groves, eubank, smith are really some of the better fights for anyone at 168

168 obviously isn't very good right now, but with all of those guys tied up, degale is going to have to fight someone when he gets back. Also, Ramirez is regularly mentioned as the guy at 168 that GGG would fight if he decides to move up. I guess my point is that there are potentially a couple of bigger options in the not too distant future that he would be taking himself out of running for by doing the tournament. Most of those guys in the tournament are no bigger than jesse hart so he might as well buy some time with an ok fight while waiting to see what pops up early next year.

You also have to wonder how long he will even be at 168 for. Maybe he knows he will have to move up between now and the end of the tournament which could be 2 years away.

According to the organizers, it's supposed to be over next summer

Yes, it's supposed to be 3 fights (for the finalists) in about 10 months

That's a busy schedule by today's standards, but there is very good money at stake. I think there are winning bonuses too..

I hope Degale gets a win before the end of the year, he needs it. Could set up his mandatory or a unification bout with WBO or WBC.

We'll see. That would be great if it was done in ten months but who knows. In this day and age that is hard to imagine.

It may well take longer, but I don't see it taking two years; that's how long the Super 6 took and there were 11 fights in that tournament (vs 7 here).

Also, Arum prefers to promote fights himself which wouldn't be the case with the tournament.

You do know he fought Vlasov, a huge fighter, as a fresh-faced prospect?

Yeah, he can get better competition. The SMW tournament isn't anything a fighter should be dying to enter. It's not all that great like the cruiserweight one. DeGale, Dirrells, Zeuge, Benavidez, and Uzcategui aren't in it from what I've read.

Jesse Hart is also a damn tough defense for him.

Really, there shouldn't be anything to complain about here. The tournament at SMW is full of untested guys. Yildrim, Smith, Skoglund, Cox, and Brant don't have standout wins. Eubank Jr. at least fought Saunders and will fight Abraham. Of course, Groves is the real standout name in the tournament.

Didn't he dtain Vlasov to 170 ?

Vlasov was fighting at 170 regularly, so Im not sure if Ramirez really drained him (as in forced him down). I think cruiser is a better weight for Vlasov and he's not carrying excess fat despite weighing in about 30 pounds heavier.

I imagine that it was tough making 170 and SMW, and he may have been too focused on having a size advantage...

I really don't think the competition outside is much better. Groves is as good as those guys, smith although unproven is, eubank although unproven might be. If Ramirez entered this tournament suddenly looks very interesting. It's a shame the other 168ers didn't take a leaf out the cruisers booms and all get involved, but good on those that did.

The best thing about the super six was the emergence of a couple of unknowns in Dirrell and ward who went on to feature at the top of the division, and in the case of ward went on to much greater things. I'm hopeful this tournament can provide us with another top fighter

I don't think he did. Vlasov looked great in that fight. It was a close but clear win for Ramirez. It wasn't until Vlasov started ranking up good wins at cruiserweight that people started on this.

I think it would've been better if this tournament was for these untested guy, and the winner goes on to fight Groves/DeGale/Ramirez. As of now, most of the guys in this are pretty much untested dudes fighting each other, which is great.

The winner does become a top guy, but the winner of the cruiserweight tournament can honestly go on to say they are the GoAT cruiserweight, especially if it's Usyk. That's the big difference between the tournaments and the caliber of fighters in it.

If 168 was...

Degale
Groves
Ramirez
(Guy who beat Dirrell that I can't spell)
Anthony Dirrell
Callum smith
Eubank Jr
Zeuge

It wouldn't make the winner the goat 168er, but the winner would have a heck of a resume and run of fights to rival most
