One of my favourite fighters. Amazing boxer with a decent punch. His loss against Williams was very very debatable (I had Martinez winning).

I first became aware of him during his stretch in Spain when he won in the UK three times in the space of 10 months.

I was also impressed by the fact that he was a cyclist.

Anyone know where he lives now? Is he in Spain or Argentina?

And what are your memories/views of him?

Very good fighter with an unorthodox style and a nice mix of speed and power. I also thought he deserved the first Williams fight, as I liked his work a lot more than Williams's pitter-patter punching. Incidentally, Williams won three fights that I had going the other way, and two of those featured shockingly bad cards.

KO of Williams was chilling and I wish I could have foresaw how special he would become so I would have made an effort to fight him when he came to the UK

The first time I saw Martinez was when he boxed an unknown antonio margarito in 2000. He was roughed up and stopped in 7 rounds. Didn't think he'd go on to have so much success, and would just fade in to obscurity. How wrong I was.

Beat Richard Williams , then Adrian Stone then Williams again in space of 9 or so months in UK

His first win against Williams was a bit of a shock if memory serves

Really good eye catching fighter to watch. His run as Middleweight champion might be slightly overated, but he definately fought and beat most of the best around at that time. A shame though that there wasn't that many greats at Middleweight, I would have liked to have seen how he would have faired against the cream of the 154 pounders at the height of his powers at Middleweight.

My hunch is maybe Cotto would have always been too slick.

I'm sure its just a coincidence that a lot of Spanish-based sportspeople seemed to suddenly show well-above-average stamina, even when compared to other world class sportsmen, at around the same time.

SMartinez was one of my favorites during his run. I question his loss to Cheato. I thought he won the first Williams fight, and he deserved the W v Cintron. The Cotto fight was a pure cashout.

He was a fan friendly fighter, a gentleman, and he gives back to his community. He is deserving of the HOF.
