What if Conor McGregor beats Mayweather?

To start off I don't think he stands a chance. But for arguments sake just imagine he lands a huge haymaker and knocks Mayweather spark out. How would that affect FMM's all time ranking and how would you then rank McGregor considering he would only have had one fight?

It would definitely hurt Floyd's legacy. Even though the whole thing is a circus, the fact is that LOSING TO A BOXING NOVICE would knock him out of the All-Time P4P top 20, which is probably where he resides now.

The flip side is that the expected Floyd victory does nothing to help his fistic legacy.

BOTTOM LINE: This is $trictly about the $$$...

If somehow rookie McGregor managed to win, that lone victory against a FADED all-time great would NOT make Conor an all-time great and nothing even close to it. True boxing fans would see it for what it would be...a fluke.

On the other hand an argument could be made that a loss to McGregor shouldnt hurt Floyd's legacy any more than it hurt Ali, Chavez Sr, Duran, Pacman, etc when THEY kept fighting beyond their primes!! :brick:

Well it would set Conor up for mega paydays in Boxing or MMA I would think as he'd be the biggest star in Combat Sports. Regardless of whatever else he did in Boxing or Combat Sports in general his win would probably stand for decades as the greatest win ever by a Boxer making his Pro Debut.

In fact...just for the hell of it, and for the sake of showmanship the next thing for him to do after beating Floyd would be to take on the top Kickboxer his size in the world.

It would be a stunner and the marketing possibilities for Conor off of that win would be endless.

P.S. All this means that...whether we all know he has no chance or not, Conor is gonna be trying hard to win on August the 26th because everything I stated above is true

Biggest embarrassment for boxing and more fuel to the UFC is taking over argument. And Floyd would've done it to himself. Floyd would be single handedly responsible for ruining boxing through trying to keep an undefeated record and put the nail in the coffin by losing to someone with 0 experience.

That is why many of us will buy the fight that night. It's been the reason why we've all been buying Floyd's fights since he moved to PPV. He's an Academy Award actor that plays the villain like no one else before him. He makes us hate him so much while at the same time he gives his opponent enough credence to make us believe that it will be a tough fight.

But this fight is interesting to me because of Floyd's financial position and his apparent desperation for money. I honestly think that had Floyd not needed a big payday, he'd never be getting inside the ring. Look back in history to see what has happened to the great boxers put in financial duress and forced to fight again for money. I think Floyd's doing this for all the wrong reasons and while it appears to be a very winnable fight, he's got a young animal with power in there that he has to get rid of. However it ends, it will be tougher than Floyd thinks.

I've already called this the greatest upset in the history of sports. I stick by that. Nothing compares to it IMO if Conor wins this fight. Instant Legend.

I agree it would hurt the SPORT more than Floyd but the chances are so miniscule that this particular topic borders on pointlessness.

Both the above assertions are false... Because it's a BOXING event (Possibly the RICHEST and BIGGEST Boxing event of ALL TIME) it would help Boxing.

Because of the money made by the boxers in this Boxing event -- it would draw thousands of young athletes into the game who think they have at least as much charisma and talent as Floyd Mayweather. Because a novice boxer FLATTENED Floyd they sure as Hell can learn to box as well as McGregor.

And the chances of McGregor knocking Floyd out are real. For one thing: Conor throws punches in every match he has. He throws punches at guys who know how to defend themselves. He scores dramatic KO wins. He has an uncanny delivery of his left hand. He's also a cold blooded finisher.

Secondly: Conor is 29. He's pretty close to the peak of his fighting career as far as physicality goes... Let's face it -- Floyd ISN'T!

Those advantages for Conor don't automatically make him the winner or make him the favorite... The odds favoring Mayweather are solid... But anybody who thinks this is a straight walkover fight for Floyd like the Andre Berto fight was... They've never seen Conor take anyone out.

This is a cross over fight like James Toney vs Randy Couture and Ray Mercer vs Tim Sylvia... By the way, Ray Mercer upset Tim Sylvia... It happens.

It could happen. Chances are EXTREMELY thin. But, if it did, I would shit my pants. Conor would be seen as the baddest man in all of combat sports. Not sure how much bigger this man's head can get. He'd probably win office in Ireland. He could probably do that not though.

The writers who have not considered age in their predictions of this fight should not be able to use that in their articles after this fight, but they will because no one wants to be wrong. If Mayweather wins, his legacy is probably secure, although it may take a hit if it goes the distance. If McGregor wins, the boxing experts will never give him credit. They will say and write that Mayweather was past his prime, but now they say and write that McGregor has no chance. I think he does.

If conors knocks him out he is in the p4p top 10 right away. With just 1 fight. Than he becomes a megastar with potential mega fights with canelo, GGG or chavez jr, where he wil become stupid rich.

A loss for floyd would a debacle. A top 10 atg even at 40 doesnt lose to a debut boxer

If it does happen it's because it was orchestrated -and it will be obvious for all to see -

I agree if that was the only circumstances, but Floyd has been on a two year hiatus. There is a reason why he retired. He didn't want to fight anymore. He's only doing this because McGregor is the perfect opponent to make a lot of money. He is still a dangerous opponent in my opinion. He is one of the best mixed martial artists of all time. I know that Floyd is one of the best boxers of all time, but is he still at that level now? I don't think so. Regarding him being P4P No. 1 on BoxRec all time, I don't agree with that. If Sugar Ray Robinson was Mayweather's age and Robinson fought McGregor, who would win? I would pick Robinson. The fact that people (not a majority, but still a large amount of people) think McGregor will win tells me that Mayweather is not considered to be better than Robinson P4P all time best boxer.

There is not a chance in a million that a McGregor win would "orchestrated" -- Floyd values his "O" above all things... He would have Fought undefeated Keith Thurman or undefeated Kell Brook in Unified World Welterweight Championship Fights instead of loser Andre Berto because those fights would have been smash hits with the fans. In Berto's previous 6 fights he was beaten 3 X and knocked down 6 X. That was a widely panned fight nobody was anxious to see other than die hard Floyd fans.. Or Floyd would be fighting Errol Spence instead of Conor McGregor and be the underdog like Wladimir Klitschko was to Anthony Joshua.. if Floyd wanted to become a World Champion one more time, possibly he would take a risk like 41-year-old Klitschko did and fight Spence.

I've never seen Floyd take a big risk with any of his fights. If you look at all of his opponents, they were all having one problem or another when Floyd fought them.. The guy who lit Floyd up the most was Zab Judah in the early rounds of their fight.. Judah had just looked horrible in losing to the plodding Carlos Baldomir, a modern version of Gene Fullmer.. Zab looked a few slices short of a loaf against Baldomir and attracted Floyd's attention.

Just like McGregor.. Floyd saw Conor tapping out in 1 of his losses.. That impressed Floyd so he calls him Mr. Tap-out.. That's when he wanted to get it on.

Floyd/Judah was agreed to before Zab fought Baldomir.

That was a tough stretch Zab was in... No wins in 4 straight fights... And the Floyd fight was cemented by his terrible showing versus Baldomir.

He was fighting Floyd whatever the result was. I won money on Baldomir.

No, it will draw people to UFC because the best of UFC would've beaten the best of boxing which people would look at it as superior. And neither James Toney nor Ray Mercer were on the level of the Floyd that would be fighting McGregor.

If McGregpr were to win....

I would stop thinking there was much technique or science to boxing and would probably lose interest in the sport...It would be a sad day.

About the same chances as Ireland beating USA in hockey or basketball.

MMA fighters are allowed to use any science and technique a boxer uses... NOTHING boxers do is off limits for them -- and they can do 100 times more.

There will be no rematch even if McGregor wins... This is the end of the line for Mayweather, win or lose -- McGregor is the Snake River Canyon Jump

Floyds "0" can't pay the IRS. He'd trade that 0 to get out of debt in a Las Vegas minute.

Strange things happen in boxing. No, Floyd isn't getting knocked out in this fight. But he could sustain a brutal cut or twist his ankle or something like that.

If he loses this fight it will take away the thing that Floyd likes to rub in people's faces - the 0 at the end of his record.

A loss will be catastrophic to Floyd. He'd never recover mentally.
