Barrera Wants to Fight Cleverly at Madison Square Garden

Sullivan Barrera hasn’t wasted any time calling out who he wants to fight next.

Barrera sent a Twitter message to WBA world light heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly and his promoter, Eddie Hearn, on Monday morning. The Cuban-born Barrera (20-1, 14 KOs), who overcame a first-round knockdown to beat Joe Smith Jr. (23-2, 19 KOs) in impressive fashion Saturday night in Inglewood, California, urged Cleverly not to fight a “fake” light heavyweight and challenged him to come to the United States to fight him at Madison Square Garden.

Barrera Tweeted: @EddieHearn @NathanClev lets get it on bring the #brits to @TheGarden @HBOboxing will make fight NO fight a fake lightheavy #legacy

Challenging Cleverly clearly makes sense for the 35-year-old Barrera, but it probably would do better business by taking a Cleverly-Barrera bout to Wales, Cleverly’s home country. Russia’s Sergey Kovalev traveled to Cardiff, the Welsh capital, to take the WBO light heavyweight championship from Cleverly in August 2013.

Isn't the WBA light-heavyweight world champ, Nathan Cleverly, possibly facing Badou Jack on the undercard of the Mayweather-McGregor bout?

I have my doubts about the Welshman getting past the Al Haymon-managed Swede.

Badou Jack wanted that fight, but there has been no news on who Badou Jack or Gervonta Davis will fight.

Badou Jack isn’t looking to slowly settle into his new weight.

The former super middleweight champion has been in talks for weeks ahead of a possible light heavyweight showdown against Nathan Cleverly. An industry source told RingTV.com that the sides are getting close to a deal, and the bout would take place on the Floyd Mayweather-Conor McGregor undercard on August 26 in Las Vegas.

The only undercard fight announced so far is Gervonta “Tank” Davis against a to-be-determined opponent in a junior lightweight title defense. Jack, like Davis, fights under the Mayweather Promotions banner.

Jack (21-1-2, 12 knockouts) vacated his 168-pound title following a January draw with James DeGale. The Swede had been sapping himself to make weight, but already feels great as he cuts into shape for his return to 175. The 33-year-old fought at light heavyweight early in his career, but made a name for himself as a super middleweight.

Cleverly (30-3, 16 KOs) made five defenses of his light heavyweight belt before Sergey Kovalev knocked him out in 2013. The Welshman then moved up to cruiserweight and eventually dropped a split decision to Tony Bellew, before settling back at 175 pounds.

He’s coming off wins over Andrzej Fonfara and Juergen Braehmer, but figures to have far more trouble with Jack, an athletic puncher.

It’s an article published by The RING, which is a reliable source.

I tend to focus on the main claims being made by each article rather than closely scrutinize each sentence in order to identify any typos, grammar issues or unrelated minor factual inaccuracies that they may or may not contain

I couldn’t care less about irrelevant minutiae that doesn’t directly relate to the original point of the article, hence my complete lack of interest to proofread articles prior to submitting them to this forum. :TU:

They could possibly fight in the ballroom, the main arena would be 90% empty.

This fight was way too ambitious for Joe Smith... Maybe he learned something... Talking Cleverly, Barrera isn't looking for tough comp.

How about Beterbiev?

Jack - Cleverly would be a fine fight. Jack would be favored, but Cleverly isn't way far down from Jack's best wins, and Jack could benefit from getting a really decisive win. If Jack wins it, he is in the mix of the many world class LHW's that include Ward, Kovalev, Stevenson, Beterbiev, Gvozdyk, Alvarez, and Barrera. We can always use more official world class fighters in the mix, as long as they're willing to fight each other.

Barrera - Cleverly would also be fine. I think it's a step down from Barrera's best win. But I also think Barrera doesn't have a lot of superior options right this moment, aside from Beterbiev and Browne. Ward and Kovalev probably won't return to the right soon, Stevenson and Alvarez are busy with each other, Gvozdyk is scheduled to fight in August. If Barrera wanted to fight Cleverly sooner rather than later, then that's another reason to be happy with it, because it's good competition relative to how busy the scheduling is.
