Matt Christie's editorial

by dalcumly
In this weeks Boxing News editorial Matt Christie expresses his feelings on the Mayweather/McGregor 'world tour' and the forthcoming 'fight'.
In my opinion it sums up exactly how I feel about this absolute joke of a boxing contest. Perhaps my age, and being a traditionalist has a lot to do with it, but how can any boxing fan treat this seriously. A few people, I accept, are going to make an awful lot of money, but I'm stunned and extremely disappointed that ANY boxing sanctioning organisation should authorise this event. Furthermore , how can a recognised referee and judges agree to take part. All it does as far as these officials are concerned, is prove that their love of money is greater than their respect for the sport.
If Matt Christie believes that by covering the fight will sell more magazines then he's obliged to report on it and the build up but if not he should leave well alone.
This is equivalent of letting McGregor play centre half for Real Madrid in the Champions league final. Mayweather will box him senseless for a few rounds and then he'll let rip until the referee steps in with MCGregor's face looking like a 'pound of mince'.
The whole event sums up the lack of integrity among those in Las Vegas who control boxing. Money is king.

I long for the days of Blinky Palermo, Tex Rickard and Don King. It was all about a mans honour back then. Never money. They didn't even call them 'prizefighters'.

It's a freak show in the WWE vein.

But I'm curious as to see what happens.

That said, to describe it as a true boxing match in a nonsense. And win or lose, Mayweather shouldn't notch himself to 50-0 afterwards. He should really remain at 49-0 in my opinion.

If it were 49-1 however, I'm counting that shit.

Floyd is all about the money,

I could see his flunkies spending £1m here and £1m at the bookies on his behalf on McGregor.

Then cash in again on the mandated rematch.

yeah, its not as though Floyd has a massive ego closely related to his unbeaten record, he'd simply laugh off a loss to a total novice

Because whilst it is a mismatch, it's not a mismatch to the extent that people like to pretend it is.

I've heard people say it would be the biggest upset in sports history if McGregor won. It wouldn't. It wouldn't be the biggest in the last couple of years.

he mentioned a bit of argy bargy at the mayweather McGregor promotional event in London as though it was a sign of how this stupid contest is attracting all kinds of thugs who don't follow boxing.

yet the previous week he failed to mention how 200 blokes had a full scale punch up at the copper box after mcness lost to byfield. imagine if that had happened at the mayweather McGregor press tour.... I imagine he'd have seen it as a sign of the apocalypse.

Is anyone actually taking this seriously? All I've seen is people slagging the match off.

I'm interested to hear your rationale behind that belief...

Leicester City won the Premier League for god's sake.

McGregor is nowhere near LC level in boxing terms

Is he even Tranmere?

Terrible point of comparison

Are you saying Leicester City were more likely to win the Premier League than McGregor is to beat Mayweather?

McGregor beating Mayweather would be a big upset, but price-wise he's around 6/1 to win the fight. Floyd could twist his ankle, he could get caught by a daft punch, he could genuinely have regressed more than expected bearing in mind he's now in his 40's and not fought in two years. I don't think he will lose, I don't expect him to have any serious trouble, but those things could happen.

Leicester were 5,000/1 to win the league and as an event it's not even a once in a lifetime job. It's a once in history occasion.

Dirk is correct IMO. I'm no soccer expert but for Leicester to win a 38 game a team league is a far bigger mathematical upset than if a guy somehow beats another guy in a boxing match.

right, because the 6/1 odds really reflect the likelihood of McGregor winning and that over 7 fights with Floyd he'd definitely win one.

its actually happened, so, yes.

I also love how rancid decisions are a new problem that needs addressing.

Leicester were competing against teams roughly on their own level.

McGregor isn't.

While I'm not overly interested in Mayweather/McGregor the market is there. Shiit like Ward/Kovalev is worse for the sport in the grand scheme. Fighters are way overpaid here.

I agree with your statement but due to the format of the league and a squad system versus a one off event involving only two participants, it.is far more likely mathematically that Conor will beat Mayweather than it was that Leicester would win the league the year they did.

The latter point is nonsensical. Douglas beating Tyson was more likely to happen than Mayweather beating McGregor because one has happened and one hasn't? You seem to have completely missed the past tense in the example?

McGregor is 6/1 and has been backed in because money has been staked on him, but that still doesn't change the fact that he wasn't much bigger than that when the fight was announced and prices went up for the first time. Leicester were 5,000/1 for crying out loud.

The fact that they had to beat several Mayweather's sells me(and I know nothing about soccer), but I don't think Conor would win 1 out of 5,000 fights with all things being the same.

okay, so the odds are that McGregor would win 1 fight out of 7 with Mayweather

and in your terms, that chance is basically, that Mayweather has a really bad freak Haye-type injury

Mayweather has had 49 fights, against actual boxersand in none of them has he had an injury so severe that he had to retire from the fight

remind me again how likely it is that McGregor might win? his only chance, is an eventuality that is at this point in time quantifiably worse than a one in 49 chance

if you think 6/1 is a good representation of the odds, you lump on it big mate and pray for the 6 rematches (or 49, depending on how you look at it) necessary for McGregor to eventually benefit from Mayweather's freak injury :TU:

Do you follow any other sports than boxing? Not a leading question - just wondering if you do in order to illustrate a point about just how unreal Leicester winning the league was.

Yes, NFL, College Football, Golf, Tennis, MMA, NBA, LOL. I'm a junkie. I know enough to understand the enormity. I'm with you, it's the Browns winning the Super Bowl next year. I'd still consider this the biggest upset in Boxing history, much more shocking than Douglas/Tyson.
