Mayweather: I'm Going Toe To Toe!

"Mayweather: I Can't Move Like I Did Before, I'm Going Toe To Toe!" (Source: Boxing Scene)
There won't be no moving, there won't be no running - according to Floyd Mayweather Jr. (49-0, 26 KOs).
The former five division world champion claims that he's planning to fight "toe to toe" with UFC superstar Conor McGregor on August 26th at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
But Mayweather insists that he's no longer the same fighter. He claims that his body is giving him hell in training camp and he can't get his footwork going like he did in the past.
Because his footwork is not on par like it was before, Mayweather expects a showdown filled with fireworks.
“He wants to win bad,” Mayweather said. “Remember, I’m older, so I can’t move like I used to move, so it’s basically going to be a toe-to-toe battle.”
“It’s going to be exciting. He’s going to come fight. He’s going to come out. He’s upset. I’ve seen it before. When these fighters get upset with me, they come out like they’re going to try and kill me. My job is to do what I do, just keep my composure. He does have a chance. Every time two warriors go out there and compete, anything can happen. We just saw a week ago, two weeks ago, a guy who started boxing at 18, a teacher, beat one of the best fighters of all time, which was Manny Pacquiao, so anything can happen in a combat sport.”
Thoughts?

it is funny how floyd is talking himself down. that says a lot about what kind of a mismatch we are likely to see.
i wouldnt be surprised though if floyd stands his ground. a guy with no boxing experience may well be an open target and best not to let him gain confidence by running from him.

This fight is spawning the stupidest hype. Mayweather fighting toe-to-toe like he's Erik Morales. Yeah right.

To be fair to Floyd though, during his bouts against certain opponents like Canelo, Mosley, Berto, Ortiz, Cotto, Maidana etc. he refrained from "running" for good portions of those fights. He stood either stood his ground in the centre of the ring or was completely comfortable about leaning on the ropes.
Whilst I truly don't expect Mayweather Jr. to actually go toe-to-toe against McGregor, I doubt he needs to employ any lateral movement at all, since his shoulder roll alone is probably good enough to defend himself against an inexperienced outside fighter like Connor.
Floyd should be able to remain stationary, blocking all of McGregor's telegraphed punches, whilst countering him with his own shots.

Very brave going toe to toe with an unboxed kid.
Sums him up perfectly

I think he'd easilly win going toe to toe anyway. But it'd make sense just to say this to try and sell it.

He's just trying to sell more PPV's just like McG is with his trash talk. Floyd has taxes to pay and probably wont get his money from this fight until Uncle Sam gets his tax money.

Some of it is just Mayweather hyping the fight, some of it is probably the truth.
I'm sure, that at 40 and retired for nearly 2 years, training camp in difficult..even though Floyd always stays in remarkable condition.
His legs undoubtedly are not the same.
He's a cautious guy by nature and doesn't figure to go toe to toe. But if Mayweather learns early just how soft the pudding is, he may very well stand there and open up big time on McGregor's lantern-sized head.
Even an aged Mayweather probably has little fear of a guy who has never won a boxing match in his life.

Is "whilst" even a word? Drives me up the fornicating wall. In addition to that EO, try not to take 3 to 5 or 6 paragraphs to say what you have to say..
As far as the fight, it will be competitive for the first half.Everyone is counting out McGregor for his stamina (in addition to his boxing skills). I'll tell you what, 5 minutes of MMA/wrestling is harder than 15 minutes of boxing. MMA guys go 5 rounds of it. Mcregor will be in better shape than most think.

BS, Boxing is WAY harder that MMA so that's not true at all. Not even close. I came from an MMA/Wrestling background and had been doing it for years...I too, thought it would be a simple transition to boxing and boxing tore the ass out of me. I quit that sport pretty quickly after picking it up. Way harder.

You are silly. You must have been training like a little sissy in MMA/wrestling then. If you are training correctly, any discipline can be exerting. Maybe boxing was just tougher for you because you were accustomed to MMA/wrestling? I too have trained MMA and boxing. There is much more to learn in MMA than boxing. That makes no sense at all... I was an amateur and professional boxer and it's a tough sport, but not killing.. MMA is the toughest sport out there.. Muay Thai. Jiu Jitsu, Wrestling, submission holds, elbows and heels to the face, shins and knees to the ribs, cauliflower ears from getting twisted and battered.. A boxer can get away with a half hour run in the morning and 2 hours of work in the gym after work.. Many boxers take fights with very little training or preparation and are just there to pick up their check because a card needs to be filled out because a boxer pulled out of their 8 rounder or whatever.
MMA is like a religion.. these guys stay in the training gym for hours on end, working on all the different disciplines of the sport.. Boxing is tough.. But compared to MMA it's a piece of cake.. If Boxing tore the ass off you it's because you don't have any talent for it.. It's not suited for you.. For guys with talent it's not that way.. You look at the faces of a lot of good boxers and they hardly have a mark after 50 fights.. MMA fighters look like they've been through World War III if they have half that many fights... I'm not say MMA is the smartest way to go.. It's among the toughest ways to go.

Mayweather is a very smart guy... "I'm old... I can't move... I'm like forty 11 and I just can't do it anymore... The training is killing me... I can't keep up with these young guys anymore because I'm an old grand daddy now.. I'll have to go toe-to-toe with a much bigger stronger younger man... woe is me... I haven't knocked anyone out since I was 13.. Gee Whiz.. Maybe I made a mistake here because my legs are gone and I can't move any. Gotta go toe-to-toe."
Translation... "Come on people... Everybody can see this on PPV... You don't have to buy a ticket to Vegas to see my demise... This young 29-year-old studly World Champion Fighter is liable to kick my poor old woman beating ass all over Vegas ... and better than that you can watch it happen."

Whilst being fair to Floyd, he ran from Canelo like a little bitch for most of the fight.
Watch the last two rounds where Canelo stands in the middle of the ring whilst Floyd dances around and around.
Not too long before this circus atrocity goes down in history as the biggest fan rip off in the history of sports as a whole.
Whilst I would love anyone to KO the greedy little wife beater, it ain't gonna be Connor potty mouth McGregor

Floyd is going to be Floyd, he's a calculated guy. Floyd will use his boxing skills and take the openings McGregor gives him (which in this case will be a lot, especially as the fight gets into the half way mark). Floyd would be dumb to simply stand in front of McGregor and trade shots, why give McGregor that opportunity. McGregor is a puncher, when you start standing in the pocket squaring yourself up against some like him and dont use the skills you have you make it a 50/50 fight, especially early in a fight when McGregor will be most dangerous.
I expect Floyd to start out more cautious picking up on Connors tendencies. After about 4 rounds, Floyd will have McGregor figured out and start being more offensive. Not so much because Floyd will want be a tough guy, but because McGregor will be a sitting duck with no answers.

My original comments are correct and I personally have my doubts that you've even watched the Mayweather-Canelo bout, since your flamboyant description about Floyd's approach is preposterously incorrect.

I'd really like to know that myself honestly. I made the transition to Boxing thinking the same thing. Stand up and grappling were my strengths in MMA. Kicking was not. I did not have the karate background that the others had in my weight class. I honestly left MMA because of the lower leg kicks below the knee inside and outside of the leg. They are very effective, I know...but just a gay way to fight IMO and i got sick of the lower leg kicks...take a bunch of those from anyone and you are a sitting duck and immobile.
I would bet a good amount of money that Conor doesn't finish 12 rounds with Floyd. In MMA, there are plenty of places to rest in there especially when action takes to the mat. If I had top control on most of my opponents, they weren't going anywhere and I'm not working hard to keep them there. I could fight hard for 15 seconds and rest for 30 without getting locked up into an arm bar. Or if we are in stand up in the traditional overhook/underhook against the wall or fencing, any good wrestler easily could bide time in that area as well.
In Boxing, there's nowhere to hide like MMA. Yes, you could be finished at any point in a fight in MMA while loafing but it's way easier to find a way to lock up and get your wind back. In boxing, there was no where like that. In sparring, you obviously can't go and hold the other guy to buy time...it's sparring. You are supposed to give him a look and he you...but mostly me give them a look because they were the "boxers". Then i found that you use so many more muscles than i ever imagined with Boxing. Your core is way more important...legs are enormous and once you lose those, they are gonzo for the rest of the fight...they don't come back. Neck...you need to constantly be moving the head and dodging punches via the neck and head. While doing all this, I need to make sure to keep my freaking hands up? Come on man...Throwing punches continuously is way more tiring than MMA action.
We'll see how Conor performs and I'll be interested in seeing how quickly he tires in there. Maybe it is just me. Who knows.

Good post caldo, nice insight from the mma/grappling perspective, maybe boxing is the toughest, that would be nice to hear haha although I can't help but think kick boxing mui Thai would be the most painful.
