Jem Mace came to my mind. Despite his lack of size he was arguably the first heavyweight champion of the world, and fought into crazy age.

Mace was some fighter indeed. Travelled the world off the back of his skills, even as an old man. I'd like to read more about him. It's only been chapters in boxing books and the odd wee web profile like that I've read.

For me in the past few years, Jimmy Barry, Newsboy Brown, Jack Blackburn, Venice Bhorkasor.

3 great fighters come to mind, 2 French, 1 Scots...

Theo Medina, the French gypsie
Jim Brady, the little Scots Bantamweight

and the stand out French Welter cum Middleweight Robert Villemain.

We actually used to discuss fighters from way back much more often on this Forum.
Carter, Jeannette and especially Burley used to get some attention.

When I meant "you," I didn't mean us, I meant people who are somewhat sane.

I am taking that as a compliment.

Seriously though, it's not like these guys are no names. All have been in the HOF for many years. But in a sense you are right. You don't hear a lot about them anymore. They weren't heavyweights and they fought well before most of us were born.

Yep and he twice went the distance with Freddie miller who was an amazing fighter. Ofc tarlton only had one lung too! He was very tough

Tarleton was a skilled classy boxer and was also known for sneaky dirty tactics, a bit of a old veteran that way...

there is film of him where you can see his style & skill. He was also both coach and brother in law to the very skilled Ernie Roderick, himself one of only 4 fighters to take Armstrong to task, 15 rds. during Armstrong's 3 title reign.

I thought this was going to be a post about Emmanuel Augustus - there are a couple of YouTube videos about him with similar titles out there. Being churlish you could say anyone who hasn't heard of EA likely hasn't heard of all kinds of much better fighters from the recent or distant past, but that's be missing the point maybe.

Anyway, there was a time that title could fairly apply to one of those Black Murderers' Row guys though they're getting a bit more recognition these days.

In an article from 1961 about Archie Moore, AJ Liebling dismissively referred to Eddie Booker as "an opponent who has left no footprints on the sands of time". Given what Moore himself said of Booker and the fact he's now a HOF inductee his claim would be a solid one back then at least.

For me in the past few years, Jimmy Barry, Newsboy Brown, Jack Blackburn, Venice Bhorkasor.

There's a whole book dedicated solely to Jem's fighting career published by 'Milo' the same publisher that released the Bartley Gorman biography, fantastic read it is and also delves deep into his life outside boxing, it also reveals how much of an influence he was on the Marques of Queensbury rules and the introduction of gloves, he was for a time regarded as the first ever Heavyweight World Champion while never weighing more than a middleweight ! Just think in today's terms, that would be like GGG taking on AJ for the Heavyweight crown and winning, and then going on to defend the title on numerous occasions, just beggars belief, the achievement in itself is nothing short of amazing !!!

Possibly Duilio Loi from Italy... Most people have blank stares when you mention him... They never heard of him.

He beat Carlos Ortiz twice... He beat Eddie Perkins who who was a real good fighter... He beat Glen Flanagan in Miami Beach... He was no puncher, but he was a real good boxer with 3 losses in 126 fights...
