It took Rickard only six months to go from a "flat no" to signed contract, and Benny Leonard even had some clot; they all hated Don King, but in the end, they all ended up boxing for him anyway.

Tex Rickard was not bankrolled before a fight by Cable TV stations or ABC TV.
The money taken in at fights Rickard put on was completely dependent on paying customers showing up.
Don King, who destroyed boxing with the help of TV and Cable TV who prepaid him before a fight took place, never promoted a fight where the physical attendence of paying customers mattered at all.

it's strange, we all know Boxing is full of corruption, back handers, payoffs & pay-outs, ducking and diving, fight fixing and ratings too, yes we all know it. But it still amazes that so many people will somehow deny it or make allowance for it. Its worse than Politics for God's sake.
It's worse yet among Publications & Reporters who tow the line and TV Commentators who blank over it... the Fans KNOW, so just admit it in your writings, conversations and commentaries - Call ALL Promoters, Managers and Governing Bodies to task on it... and Boxing will soon change, in that fighters will get better treatment and earned rights, chances and placement, and chumpions will no longer get away with fighting lesser men.
But for now we know it's inevitable that IF you want a proper chance, crack at it or a Title, you basically have to belong too, and/or are financially tied in someway, direct or indirect to the TOP Boys who Run the Show...
but as I said, TV, Commentary and Trade Periodicals ADMITTING the BS, fighting for TRUE Champions & Contenders COULD change it!

I read an anecdote once where they asked the guy responsible for Don King Productions' 'life gate' (I didn't know his name when I read it.) of all the fights what was the easiest fight to sell? He replied "the Thrilla in Manila, Marcos ordered everyone to attend and the fight sold out in one day."
