Floyd would only agree to this if he felt it gave him some sort of advantage.

This is going to turn around and bite Conor in the ass. Once he starts getting tagged unmercifully he may regret the size change.

He has known hand issues. How can it give him an advantage? They are just trying to sell more PPVs.

Floyd nearly always competes using 8oz gloves. There's only been a few bouts (above the 147lbs limit) where he's used 10oz gloves.

Isn't this just smoke for promotional purposes.

No matter what the size, weren't boxing gloves designed to protect the hands, not cushion blows to the head????

Exactly this.
Keep your eye on twitter for an announcement on at thread count each boxer will have in their shorts and the impact this will have on their movement...and the colour of the gum shield so as to dazzle their opponent

Floyd usually fights with 8oz gloves.
McG usually fights with 4oz MMA gloves, yet trained in 10oz gloves for this bout because it's the standard for the weight class.

Both apparently agreed on 8oz gloves eventually which is smaller than the weight class standard, exactly what Floyd is used to and closer to what McG is used to. Everybody should be happy about this minor change, no?

I only know 10oz gloves and the little MMA gloves. All I know is that defending punches with MMA gloves is much more difficult than with those giant clown gloves used in boxing. The only difference I can make out is that Floyd's hands are more likely to get fractured in less padding. Not necessarily the wisest choice for the notoriously brittle one.

He seems to do alright when after he takes extended breaks from boxing. It will be an advantage because to McGregor, Floyd will feel like a puncher.

He might be able to win if Floyd breaks both of his hands. That's probably the play.

No he won't, McGregor gets hit harder all the time. What he will feel like is one of the best boxers in history smashing him with punches he can't see or avoid.

Later on in that press conference, Mayweather retorted by shouting “If you want 8 oz gloves, let’s put 8 oz gloves on. If you want 4 oz gloves, let’s put 4 oz gloves on.”
McGregor’s response?
“Give me 4 oz gloves then.”

-------------------

Conor definitely wins the battle on the mic. It would have been a sweet compromise to fight in 4oz MMA gloves under boxing rules.

8-ounce gloves sell better than 10-ounce gloves. Less volume for Mayweather to block punches with. Increases the chance of McGregor scoring a KO (from 1% to 1.4%). For all of these reasons, the fight would be perceived as less of a sure thing for Mayweather, and thus a fight more worth buying. So 8 ounce sells better than 10 ounce.

I haven't seen him being set up for punches he don't see nor been hit non stop with combinations which feel worse than single telegraphing punches a boxer can see a mile away.

You almost agreed but you couldn't make it all the way. Dude gets kicked in the face with shins and elbowed in the jaw. As far as your telegraphed punches, that's bullshit too. Nothing anywhere near Floyd's caliber Boxing, but when you're looking for a take down or a low kick what you call ugly can be a clever surprise.

Like I said, he'll be blinded by talent. Not suddenly overwhelmed by your agenda of Floyd on roids superpower.

"He knocked out McGregor but he couldn't budge canelo!!!!"

McGregor doesn't get hit by boxers. Boxers are generally better punchers than MMA fighters. Boxers practice the same punches over and over. Accurate shots hurt way more than telegraphed sloppy haymakers.

McGregor does get hit by Boxers. During his amateur career and during his sparring. They're not Mayweather, but they're boxers. I guess now is when you'll tell me they're not Mayweather. LOL

Yeah, Chris Byrd would sting someone a lot more than George Foreman. Like I said, he won't see them coming. They absolutely hurt you in the sporting sense, but you wouldn't all of a sudden feel like Byrd was powerful. More like WTF was that.

I'd much rather get punched by a boxer with a glove on than take a full leverage elbow on the chin. I get that some people hate MMA, good for you. Questioning these guys dedication, training and toughness is laughable to the utmost extent.

It was Mayweather's team that petitioned for the 8 oz gloves, so it shows their confidence level. It won't make a difference, other than sell more ppv's for the fools that think CM has a very legit chance now.

The black guy (verbally) beat the white guy, that's what usually happens in boxing. :D

Of course the smaller gloves if anything will increase the likelihood of a lucky punch ending the fight and those are the only shot Conor has. Don't know why Kellerman is ignorant to that simple logic. Maybe he felt to sophisticated to go with the obvious.

One more thing that might make the miracle happen:
The first victim of aging in combat sports are reflexes, the second victim is the chin.
We've seen countless examples of fighters (boxing, MMA, etc.) turning "old" over night. Roy Jones Jr., Anderson Silva, Fedor Emelianenko... all suddenly went south from one fight to the next. When the reflexes are gone and your chin becomes vulnerable, suddenly you lost all that magic and it usually happens way before the fighter turns 40.
That and the small chance of Floyd breaking both hands on Conors forehead are the only reasons I can think of why Conor might have a shot. It definitely won't be because he's the better boxer.
