God, GGG is one of my favorite fighters and these nuthugger threads of preemptive excuses could almost make me cheer for Opie. Give it a rest, it's his biggest fight against arguably his best opponent, if he smashes him he'll get massive credit and a huge boost historically.

I use the word "sadly", because I feel that had Golovkin been with a better promoter than Universum and K2, such as GBP, Top Rank, one of Haymon's guys or even Matchroom, then Gennady would have almost certainly faced better opposition and may have already been regarded as the "biggest" name in the business.

Think about it... he arrived on the world scene in 2008 and was a dead-cert top-five 160lb-er back then.

To be honest, it's pretty bad career management for someone of GGG's talent to only be facing his first genuine top-ten pound-for-pound rated opponent at the very end of his career.

How can anyone discredit him for beating Canelo when jmw and mw are separated by a total of 6 freaking lbs..... Not a big deal.. If he beats what many consider the lb for lb number 1, it really doesn't matter about weight classes..

I don't have a lb 4 lb list or an opinion because there's a lot of guys who could make a case between Canelo, Ward, lomachenko (even though I hate to admit it), bud crawf.. But lots of ppl including boxrec have Canelo at the top. It's all opinion obviously, and boxrec is not the most respected from what I gather, but he makes a solid argument.

For my money I'd probably go with Ward also, because I'm an American.. But I feel it's a very good time in boxing with all these great fighters that make a case for the top spot.

Even if GGG would've signed with a big promoter, still it would've been very difficult for him to get guys like Martinez, Sturm, and Quillin. The only guy at that time who was about to fight GGG was Pirog but sadly he got badly injuried and retried. Anyway Canelo is a better fighter and a bigger star than all those guys who ducked GGG at that time.

That might be true... kind of... but has Canelo achieved as much at 160lbs (i.e. as a fully-fledged 160lb-er, not a borderline junior middleweight) as these guys that Golovkin never faced since he arrived on the world stage in 2008?

In terms of media coverage, beating Canelo would be GGG's best win. If Canelo lost the decision to Lara, he would not be on any P4P top ten list. I think GGG's best win will still be against Jacobs who was at least 20 pounds over the middleweight limit at the time he fought GGG. GGG should beat Canelo. GGG may not knock him out, but he should get the decision if the judges are not biased.

Floyd "cherry picked" Canelo? Canelo was something like 42-0, and Floyd was 36 years old. The same dumb argument could be made that Canelo was trying to cherry pick Floyd because he was so old, as most boxers are clearly declining at 36. Canelo just came off a win over Trout, who easily beat Cotto. Is Canelo now cherry picking GGG because he is about the same age as Floyd was?

Yup, GGG really had to work his way out to get the fights that he wanted. He pretty much took all the top contenders like Proksa, Macklin, Stevens, Geale, Rubio, Murray and Monroe Jr to get to Lemieux, Jacobs and now Canelo.

If he fights Canelo 2 times then that would really pay off his whole big effort he put all those years.

He had one good win over Trout which was a close but clear win.

Dmitry Pirog ruptured a disc in his back while training, forcing him to pull out of an Aug. 25 HBO main event against middleweight titlist Gennady Golovkin, promoter Artie Pelullo told ESPN.com on Thursday.

Pirog was training in the mountains in his native Russia, preparing for the bout, when he suffered the injury this past weekend, Pelullo said.

Pirog, who holds a middleweight title, was willing to be stripped of the belt in order to face Golovkin because he wanted to fight in America on HBO.

Knowing he evenutally would be stripped, Pirog accepted the fight anyway, even though he had been ordered to fight interim titlist Hassan N'Dam N'Jikam of France.

"This is the first time Dmitry has ever been injured in training," Pelullo said. "He is totally, totally upset. He thought this fight was his big coming-out party. He was willing to give up his title to fight on HBO. So he's not going to be the WBO champion anymore and he's not on HBO right now because of the injury. But HBO knows he was giving up the title to be on the network, so when he's ready to fight again, I'm sure HBO will put him back on against the right opponent because he will fight anybody, and they know that." source ESPN article

He's had a big win? Who did he beat? Was it Martinez, Lara, Froch, Alvarez? I can't remember Golovkin getting a big win, let alone a bunch of them, like you're suggesting.

Alvarez is top 5 p4p. Up until now, Golovkin has like 1 win against a top 75 p4p opponent, and he only won that fight by a hair. To suggest that he's got a bunch of big wins is pure fiction.
