anyone ever see a copy of this booklet written by Jack Johnson with Bill Simms published in 1932 ?
It sounds interesting to say the least.
I wonder if he shows his boxing instructions in photographs or drawings ?

I was looking through the bibliography of the recent biography of Jack Johnson by Geoffrey Ward UNFORGIVABLE BLACKNESS
the other day and came across this listed in it
at first I thought it may have been maybe Jack Johnson's 1927 autobiography IN THE RING AND OUT re-published under another title.
since there is an entire chapter on Health and Fitness in that book, but clearly they are 2 different publications.
(Ward lists Jack Johnson The Man-with Boxing Instructions and Health Hints as being published in 1932 not circa 1927)

It was the only copy I could find so far on the internet,so it must be super rare.
hopefully if another copy is located it could be re-printed like Jack Dempsey's Boxing Instructions booklet recent ly was.
The auction listing didnt mention its dimensions or how many pages it is.
did you see how little it sold for at the auction there ? only $1,262 dollars and it was signed by Jack Johnson himself !
Bill Sims also earlier helped ghost write Johnson's 1927 auotobiogrAPHY in the ring and out.

I found the 1908 article about Feinting and Timing
which looks to have been originally published in FRY'S MAGAZINE OF SPORT AND OUT-OF-DOOR LIFE.
and It was re-printed in a compilation book published in 2011.

In his autobiography called "Jack Johnson is a dandy" Johnson devotes a whole chapter of his book to the benefits of eating the humble banana.
It sounds mad, but Johnson comes across as very informed on the said fruit and praises it's virtues.

I believe that book you refer to JACK JOHNSON IS A DANDY was really his 1927 autobiography JACK JOHNSON-IN THE RING AND OUT,
that was re-published under that title when it was re=printed in paperback form in 1969 from what I gather.
Because I remember in it he had a terrific chapter in it entitled Reflections on Life and Living in it were extolled the Banana and he also told readers to drink Orange juice before bed instead of the morning
as a digestive. and to eat more fruit and vegatables.
I remember he also recommended highly yhe use of a medacine-ball.

It would appear that this article was published in England in 1908 before Jack Johnson followed Tommy Burns there
sounds like Jack Johnson had heard from somewhere that Tommy Burns
was writing his book,so he decided he would write his own for 'one-ups-manship" maybe.

For your information: 'Jack Johnson The Man' is only a small booklet of 48 pages. Foreward by J. B. Lewis; sections written by Ed Smith, Tad Dorgan and Damon Runyon. About 30 pages by Jack Johnson on 'physical culture', 'food' and 'conditioning and training' as well as a chronology of his boxing career. These are 12 photographs mainly of Johnson and Steve Hamas (?) showing aspects of boxing technique, but also one of Johnson (portrait) and one of him with his Graham Eight Deluxe Coupe.

Yes, I have a copy, but unfortunately in circumstances where I have to sell it. I'm a little concerned that if I scan it I may be lessening its value, but I'll try and ask somebody about that and let you know. I'm in Australia and not sure of the way I'm going to sell it at the moment.

it wouldnt less its value at all. Infact it would increase its value if you wish to sell it as more people would be interested in it. If you sold it on an online auction for example you would have to show scans.
If you are a little concerned scan the pages and stamp 'COPYRIGHT' across them.

or at least transcribe a few paragraphs from it,if you dont wanna scan any pages.
I was just mainly curious if it is mostly a re-wording of the chapter in his 1927 autobiography,
chapter-Life at Fifty-,where he goes on about the benifits of the Banana..

I'm happy to scan a few pages at the moment, but I'm a computer dinosaur. How do I put the scan on the page?

This is the beginning of the section on Physical Culture on page 21 (and the end of section on 'His Own Thoughts'.)
He talks about the value of bananas on page 27.
Is inserting a scan difficult?
"......... among my friends some of the most notable persons of America and the world in general. What a vast stretch of the imagination to picture myself a fugitive from my own country, yet sought and acclaimed by thousands in nearly every nation of the world. What an unusual circumstance, that while I feared to return to my own country and was a voluntary exile, one of the most notorious revolutionary leaders of Mexico—Villa—was making frantic efforts to finance my return to the western hemisphere and was attempting to stage in Mexico the championship fight between myself and Willard. How far removed from my thoughts was the possibility that tragedy would creep into my life - the tragedy of a prison term in one in-stance and the death by suicide of one whom I greatly loved in the other. These are but a few of the unusual events that have come into my life. There are countless others, because I have lived rapidly, intensely, eagerly. However, they cannot all be told in this one small book.
PHYSICAL CULTURE Every second of our life is devoted to battling against death. For the most part we wage the battle unconsciously. We are unaware of the conflict as long as we have good health. It is only when illness overtakes us that we are re-minded of the potential dangers of disease. Even when we feel in the best of spirits and the body is functioning normally, resistance to death is being carried on constantly. Nature carries on the fight regardless of our interest. Most of us assume that nature will do her part without our aid. We become neglectful and what is worse, deliberately set obstacles in nature's way, making her battle for life much harder and often futile. The average man knows less about the functions of his body than he does about his automobile. Men know how to build up and maintain big fortunes but they do not know how to maintain their health, the greatest fortune of all."

hey,you know what you should do ?
offer the publication for sale to one of those small publishing companies
that re-prints old time boxing instruction manuels from the various Heavyweight Champions
and other champions.
What they do is that they re-print it and add their own chapters on the life and career
of the fighter to expand it.
I'm sure there would be a lot of interest if this particular publication was re-printed
by some company.

I dunno about the first paragraph, but the second paragraph is definately taken
from his 1927 autobiography,word-for-word
( I just re-read it last week again,i always re-read IN THE RING AND OUT
around Christmas Time, because for Christmas of 1977,I was given a copy as a Chrsitsmas present.
The book had just been re-printed that year by Proteus Press.
