Mmmm... I doubt that the possibility of dropping BoxRec points influenced Floyd's decision to take the McGregor fight.

I also refuse to believe that the established hard-core boxing fraternity consider BoxRec points as one of their key factors when determining greatness.

The fact that he went nearly 10 rounds with the lowly rated McGregor caused his overall point differential between him and Sugar Ray Robinson to decrease. I know that Mayweather took the fight for financial reasons and not just to reach 50-0. I also know that BoxRec does not influence everyone's opinions on pound for pound all time greats.

If Mayweather scored a round 1 KO or a round 10 KO, it doesn't make a difference. The clear decision factor is still 1. The reason Mayweather dropped in the all-time rankings is that the all-time rankings do some complicated bullsh*t that essentially equates to taking an average of the fighter's annual ratings across his entire career. So if RJJ, Toney, or Holyfield keep fighting on for years after their prime, then their poor ratings during those post-prime years are pulling down their all-time rating. Mayweather's "current" rating in 2015 was 1977, and in 2017, it was 761. It wasn't 761 because of his performance with McGregor, it was just 761 because he had been getting hit with the poor opposition penalty due to all of his inactivity between the Pacquiao fight and now. Since McGregor's rating was 0, Mayweather's current rating would go unchanged as long as he secures a clear decision factor of 1, i.e. any knockout, or an extremely wide UD; but if the clear decision factor was anything less than 1, i.e. if it was a narrower UD, then Mayweather's rating would've suffered very seriously. But ultimately, since Mayweather chose not to stay retired, his current rating of 761 gets averaged into his all-time rating, and ends-up dragging it down.

Seems to be a flaw in the all-time ratings..

I've said it many times, unless the formula is going to get REALLY smart.. it should consider boxer careers like the JAWS statistic in baseball.... A combination of the best X years and a total sum.

Agreed. Whenever checking numbers on old time guys, I highlight the prime and ignore the rest.
We do that in boxing, but very selectively.
Some guys are judged by their prime, Ali.
Some guys overall rating is too highly influenced by their decline, Jones Jr.

Hopkins breaks the system, although he's more appreciated for his age and story
than the years he spent either KO'ing or beating #1 contenders 120-108.

Floyd is maybe top 25 P4P Boxing been around for a very long time HE HURT HIS LEGACY YESTERDAY.

Sugar Ray Robinson was 44 when he retired. If Floyd fought until that age, he would not stay undefeated if he was fighting the best pound for pound.

If Floyd would fight the current best fighters he would loose. Hes been going for the soft targets for couple of years already.

Not true and a boxer being deceased is not a factor for an all time pound for pound list. If Mayweather went the distance and McGregor lost by a decision instead of a stoppage, Mayweather's rating would have likely dropped because of McGregor's rating which is very low.

So a chance for Sugar Ray Robinson to recapture the crown should he go well in his next fight then...

The computerized rankings are always way off the mark it seems to me. They give you a ballpark of who's who in the sport, but the order of who's ranked where would almost always be significantly different for me.

The reality of the situation is that regardless the slight drop in Mayweather's BoxRec points after the McGregor fight, he still retains the top spot in BoxRec’s pound-for-pound all-time-great list.

Floyd's points won't drop any further (as he's retired) and Sugar Ray's points won't increase either, because he's no longer alive.

Floyd's BoxRec ranking didn't change as a result of engaging in the McGregor bout.

Simply put: Mayweather Jr. was number one before he faced Conor... and continues to be number one afterwards!

To suggest otherwise would be factually incorrect.

Well, maybe you’re right? Maybe you are wrong? Who knows what the future holds? But until we hear otherwise, let’s assume that a forty year old version of Floyd Mayweather is telling the truth.
