Sugar Ramos, a former world featherweight champion, passed away at the age of 75 in Mexico City on Sunday (September 3, 2017). He fought as a professional boxer in his native country of Cuba for the first five years of his career before being based in Mexico starting in 1961. During 1963, Ramos won the world featherweight title by stopping the defending champion, Davey Moore at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, California. Unfortunately, Moore died two days later from an injury that he sustained during the bout. After making three successful title defenses, Ramos was dethroned when he was stopped by Vincente Saldivar a year-and-a-half after winning the title from Moore. In two world lightweight title bouts with Carlos Ortiz, the defending champion, Ramos was stopped both times. Ramos retired after being stopped by Cesar Sinda at the Forum in Inglewood, California during 1972.

May he rest in peace. Ultiminio "Sugar" Ramos from Cuba was a Mexican crowd favorite. He delighted the fans with an all out style of fight. He was one of Cuba's greatest fighters.

For my birthday, my father took me to the Olympic Auditorium in August 1970 to witness the storied Battle of the Ramos' between Sugar and Mando.

It was the greatest birthday present I ever received. A toe-to-toe war between former champions that could have gone either way. I feel blessed to have been there.

It's been labeled as one of the greatest battles ever held at the Olympic. Packed to its rafters that night.

Both fighters are gone now, but the memory of that epic encounter is immortal.

Toll the 10 count for another of boxing's fallen warriors, Ultiminio "Sugar" Ramos.

Great fighter from Cuba. Made Mexico and Southern California his backyard giving the fans their money's worth. His fight with the great and late Vicente Saldivar was a great one. El Zurdo de Oro busted him up badly. He was never the same in my view after that. Maybe he wasn't the same guy after the Davey Moore fight.

RIP Champ and even though he wasn't the same fighter after defeating and killing ex-featherweight champion Davey Moore in a tragic fight, Ramos was one the great featherweight champions in history. Ramos is meeting Davey Moore and Vincente Saldivar again in the afterlife. Thanks for the memories from a fan like me.
