Carlos had to slip the return fire from the comb-over.

Monzon was shot in real life by his wife... And he was in quite a few street fights... He was generally pretty mellow, but when he went off it was bad.

My favorite Monzon story was maybe 14 or so years after he was retired, and actor Mickey Rourke came down to South America. At this time Mickey was pursuing a boxing career, if it can really be called that considering how many dives people took.

Somehow or another he came across the former middleweight champion and talked him into sparring him. Needless to say, Monzon landed a left hook and knocked Rourke unconscious. Apparently this was filmed but only stills of the encounter were released.

I don't know if Monzon did it because he was just a rugged no nonsense individual, or if Mickey Rourke was just that damn horrible, but nevertheless I would have loved to have been a fly on that wall when that went down.

Apparently it took place while Monzon was in prison and there are pictures of the two men with gloves on, etc--- but the infamous shot of Monzon throwing the left hook and Rourke unconscious I don't think has ever been released.

There was several newspaper articles that did report it happened, though. When Monzon died the incident was brought up in newspapers too. Apparently Rourke brought the film crew, to do a documentary, but he never released the documentary.

I find it hilarious too because Rourke was allegedly a cruiserweight but the old, retired Monzon was clearly much bigger than Mickey.

Rourke, I don't think ever had an amateur career despite all of his claims. The man who was his stepfather for many many years always spoke out publicly against Mickey and said he never was a boxer or anything.

The only genuine boxing legacy Mickey Rourke has is that he basically created the Wild Card gym. Beyond that, Rourke never was no amateur champion or tough street fighter.

He was simply a guy who liked hanging around genuine tough guys, kind of like Mickey Theo hanging around Lenny McLean and thinking of himself as a tough guy just because he was in the same room as tough guys.

There used to be a guy on BoxRec who frequented the board quite a lot, and he was a boxer. I think he actually used the ring name "Italian Stallion" or something like that. Anyways, he used to say how Rourke's people came to him to offer a fight and he took it later to back out because they wanted him to take a dive.

Despite all of his training and Hollywood marquee value, etc--- Rourke couldn't fight a lick. I like how Ray Mancini put it once, "Mickey would skip rope for a round and smoke a cigarette and would think he was really training."

Every single "win" Rourke had as a professional boxer ought to have an asterisk next to it. I've seen enough footage where people were "dropped" with body slaps, etc.

The real question is, "Did Rourke know that all of his fights were fixed? Or was he naive and it was his managers doing?", I tend to think the former only because Mickey Rourke has a long history of telling flat out lies or exaggerating the truth.
