I read he is at the moment getting £1200 a month funding, but he wants more to stay amateur.

Isn`t this quite a large amount already, and how much more does he want?
And do other international boxers receive this.

Woh that's about £15000 a year. Somebody cut his funding before he buys a yacht.

i doubt he'll be getting that much at the moment (well, previous to the olympics)...thats probably how much he wants.

This weeks BN puts him having this amount.

That's VERY good money for a 17 year old, regardless of what your 'job' is.

I thought the top lottery funding came it at 18 grand a year.

its very good mnoney for a lot of people regarless of their age. though to be fair to amir, the quote is from his coach, who also states of the funding issue... "and they're going to have to look after me a bit better" could the wolves be circling already i wonder?

I hope his grants are given in the form of vouchers. Amir seems like a sensible lad, but I do worry about a young lad given that kind of money. Mark Lewis Francis was given all kinds of funding, but apparently he's been splashing the cash on fancy things.

Ask the average pro boxer how handy £1200 a month would be.
Only the top boys earn the big money in the pro game.
I personally think £1200 a month is a good amount for an amateur.
I think I am correct in saying most pro boxers have a `real` job also to their boxing careers.

I wouldn't have thought most amateur boxers would be on £1200 a month.

However, surely Khan's showing at the Olympics should be rewarded. It's not like £1200 / month is a huge salary. If he turned pro tomorrow it would be the amateur ranks' loss and he'd be getting a great deal more money.

Of course most amateur boxers do not get this, that is why the game is called amateur not professional.

And I have been impressed as much as anybody by his performance in the games. He was excellent.
I just thought that the amount he was said to receive at the moment seemed quite a good deal for an amateur, and yet unless I read the story wrong he was not happy with the amount and wanted considerably more, so I was wondering how much more.
And why would he want to buy a yacht? He is not thinking of changing sports now is he?

My point his I think he deserves more. Not saying pay him like a professional but his success should be rewarded.

Rewarded how, one off payment?, £1200 a week?
How?

Whatever he feels necessary. For example, his family have spent loads following him around the world in tournaments. Why not fund the travel and accommodaton of his trainer and family.

His success deserves a reward.
