I mean he could've do it before Gonzalez had to fight Russell. He was scared to go down again ?

What does Mares gain if he gets knocked out in the 1st round again??? ... Besides, Gary Russell out-boxed, battered, and knocked out Gonzalez so easily it was a joke.. Gonzalez was nowhere...and Mares was still getting World Title opportunities against guys like Leo Santa Cruz -- who sure as Hell wasn't going to fight Gary Russell in a million years... And neither were Selby, Frampton, Cellar, or any other top Featherweight.

I'm just talking about avenging a very bad loss. Mares should do that. :OhYes:

My explanation to your question might bore you, since your claim about Mares being fearful or “scared” is far more interesting than the truth, which is normally the case, since lazy fans prefer the “ducking” narrative over the tedium of real-world events…

The bout between Jhonny Gonzalez and Abner Mares took place in August 2013. Mares then exercised an immediate rematch clause and a second fight was set for the following February, but got postponed due to a rib injury suffered by Abner four months later (December 2013).

The same month, Jhonny Gonzalez apparently signed an exclusive contract with Golden Boy, meaning that both himself and Abner Mares were now under the same promotional banner.

GBP then sued Jhonny Gonzalez and his Mexican promoter Promociones del Pueblo (during March 2015) alleging that they conspired with Al Haymon to violate the exclusive promotional contract they had with him.

Apparently, in February 2015, Promociones del Pueblo and Al Haymon were trying to put together a bout between Jhonny Gonzalez and Gary Russell Jr., against GBP's wishes.

In March 2015, Jhonny Gonzalez suffered a TKO loss to Gary Russell Jr. and then immediately made the jump to the super-featherweight division.

During August 2015, Abner Mares was defeated by Leo Santa Cruz.

On month later, Jhonny Gonzalez tasted defeat again to Jonathan Oquendo (an opponent that had previously lost to Abner Mares).

In February 2016, negotiations for a rematch between Gonzalez and Mares were abandoned due to a dispute over the weight limit. Abner wanted the bout to be competed at 126lbs rather than the higher super-featherweight limit.

Several weeks later, Jhonny Gonzalez changed his mind and agreed to take the rematch at 126lbs, but Mares had already signed-up to face Arturo Santos Reyes instead. Apparently, Gonzalez subsequently decided to help Reyes prepare for his bout against Mares (as they were both under the same promotional banner).

Moving onto the present day, the WBC super featherweight champion Miguel Berchelt says he would consider defending his title against Jhonny Gonzalez.

Meanwhile, Abner Mares will be defending his "regular" WBA world featherweight title this weekend against Andres Gutierrez.

Had Jhonny Gonzalez agreed to face Abner Mares at 126lbs when he was initially asked to, then the rematch would have taken place last year. He only has himself to blame for the proposed rematch against Mares rematch falling through.

Mares’ defeat to Gonzalez occurred more than four years ago and there are bigger fights to be made for him. There is no need for him to face Jhonny Gonzalez again.

Please refrain from citing “fear” or being “scared” or “ducking” in the future, until you have a thorough understanding of the subject matter.

I'm just talking TRUTH!!!! He didn't HAVE to take any risks of a repeat KO loss to Gonzalez

He got another title shot and another title.. A shot at Santa Cruz without having to accomplish SHIIT.. Gary Russell should be so lucky.
