I was a big Collins fan in the 1990s. He was always going to be too much for Chris and Nigel to handle in my book (and not only them). I've no interest in seeing him in the ring now though, or Nigel for that matter

Went to a club in runcorn 2 weeks ago and he was there with frank bruno,he said he just got his licence,i just thought it was BBBofC

I’m not so sure. I think a younger and fresher Eubank would’ve pulled something out.

With Eubank, who had a lot of fights, title fights in particular, he was better in his first rivalries, in particular stopping Benn and Watson, who really got in his face (their epic first and second fights, respectively). Then hanging on by a thread, against the underrated and difficult Ray Close, thanks to strong finishes (including a knockdown, salvaging the title in their first encounter). It definitely feels like a trajectory of steady decline, through all these hard rivalries. And then surrendering the title, where he just looked flat, his strength and reflexes gone, versus Collins. He even looked able to KO Collins, in their first fight. Chris was always able to pull something out, but he looked wasted. To Collins’ credit, the Irishman appeared to have peaked at the weight, and was unbelievably busy and awkward, a serious problem for anybody.

Eubank and Benn - who was burned out and left with few of his qualities, after the astonishing battle with McClellan, the hardest p4p puncher in the world - should’ve fought Collins earlier. But, definitely that proved to be their problem, not Steve’s! Collins had the ability to compete in a defining fight with Calzaghe or Roy Jones. I would argue he’d have shown greatness in defeat, and enhanced his already good reputation. I really feel it’s a loss to Boxing that he didn’t find his dance partner, his great rival.

What an amazing era of middleweights and super middleweights in Britain and Ireland. People get all nostalgic about the Philadelphia middleweights in the 1970s but 1990s Britain and Ireland should also be recognised.

I agree completely. Collins caught Benn and eubank with a few more miles on the clock.

I was beginning to think it was destined to be like Leonard Jr v Hagler Jr, who made a big announcement about bumping each other's bellies on the 30th anniversary of their respective fathers superfight, only for the fight never to happen.

Be interesting to see, probably same result as lastime with some kind of injury halting proceedings and the 2 getting a nice retirement fund.

I’ve got to say, once he starts letting the shots go, he looks impressive for a young guy let alone his age. He still has speed and power. His legs looks very slim though.

I would rather he didn’t fight Collins though - just seems nuts.

Robert Smith reckons that Ferdinand has not applied for a licence but I don't think a tv production would be investing the time and money if they weren't sure if a licence would be granted.

On the other hand it would be interesting if they went down the pro route and were licensed by another body
