The Welsh bloke that lost the WBO Super Feather title to Acelino Freitas. Anyone know why he never fought again? He was only 26.

Freitas was nicknamed Popo because he was breast fed until he was six or something.

I think it was a bit more complicated than that - he initially failed a brain scan but appealed the decision and got stripped of his title in the meantime. He eventually got clearance to box and fought Freitas, but then lost and never fought again. Don’t think the brain scan itself directly led to his retirement, although I always assumed it had an influence on his decision to retire early.

Jones is a local lad to me and a fellow Bluebird, so I remember being very worried about him getting a serious injury in the Freitas fight considering there may have been question marks about his brain.

I'll never forget when Jones won the world title he told his boss (as an electrician) "I quit" on the loud speak, what rotten luck he had - it was always going to be tough as he was scheduled to fight Julien Lorcy in 90 days - he would have been a clear underdog - but then to lose that pay day and then when to return - it was Freitas who was the belt holder.

Lovely technician though, beautiful to watch at times - absolutely zero power but plenty of goods and a good engine. Always used to be popular in our house cos he shared the same name as my Dad. His nervous twitches used to give us both fits of laughter and nerves at the same time. He had a twitch of kicking his leg out (which was quite amusing), but also has a twitch of dropping his hands (not so funny).

On a side, what happened to Popo's comeback. He might a one off comeback a few years ago but then mounted what he called a more serious comeback. He looked a bit well nourished at Light Middle, but he still seemed to have some good timing and a pop -albeit against a hopeless outmatched opponent. He said this was a serious comeback, but then no more fights.

Thought it was marginally better than getting punched for a living (only narrowly though)

I just watched a clip of Jones vs Freitas on YouTube and Darke said Jones did not spar for Freitas, was that cos of concerns about his scan? If so, what guts he showed against Freitas - he showed amazing spirit anyway, but if he had a huge doubt about his scan results then even more guts to even step into the ring with such a puncher.

Now though he seems less concerned because he has been seen with some shiners on allegedly and this is cos he still spars occasionally.

Popo beat the new Brazilian superstar at Middleweight back in 2012. This kid was like their Nigel Benn. On telly a lot, loads of knockouts. Then Popo dismantled him with ease, winning by ko.

He then fought a couple of years later.

He kept challenging Pacquiao to a Congressman v Congressman fight

And now he's coming back for a farewell fight aged 42 against a tough but average Mexican

I was at that fight. Yes, real worries about Jones because of the brain scan but then the supposed non puncher put Freitas down. In the end I was shouting for it to be stopped.

Given the exposure boxing gets these days bizarre to think that level of fight was held at the Doncaster Dome.
