Two tough guys who both liked to brawl. Not sure who I'd pick but I imagine it could be a crowd pleaser.

Tex wanted the fight....Snipes didn't.....so even if Snipes looks like he should win according to your assessment of these two.......he wouldn't have. Cobb had his number. Had him psyched.....
so it would be a good night for Tex.

I never picked a winner. Only stated that it "could" be a crowd pleaser and frankly I don't see why it wouldn't be. Both men were tough, could take a good punch, dish out punishment and liked to brawl. Both hit their prime at around the same junction and were comparable in size and experience. Pretty hard to screw up an exiting fight with that recipe. As for why Snipes didn't take the fight, that could have been for any number of reasons. He certainly didn't back away from Holmes, Coetzee, Berbick, Witherspoon or Page, all of whom were better than Cobb... my guess is that the money was crap.

Actually these guys had a history of near misses as I understand it....and a "no love lost" vibe.....but Tex wanted to take it to the ring....and Snipes was having none of it.

It would appeal to brawling fans... Which the majority are -- most everybody wanted Dempsey to beat Tunney and that's why that fight was so big.. It would be on the order of Snipes' draw with the tough, but the extremely punchable, wild, and very crude Scott Frank.. Maybe a level above.. Cobb wins SD.

I could see Renaldo winning a tough decision, but his head would have to be 100% in it. A prime Dokes was given all he could handle and then some by Tex, so if his head is not in it, he loses a decision to Cobb.

Mr. Snipes by wide decision.

I don't recall Cobb being blessed with such a vast skill set that he would outbox Snipes.

Here is the thing though: Snipes lost to Evangelista and drew with Scott Frank, of all people. For those reasons, I give Tex a chance.

Or you could argue that Snipes was just a punch away from stopping Holmes.....

....and Cobb went 15 rounds without ever coming close to landing a punch on Holmes.

Good point. But it would be a very interesting albeit entertaining fight.

This is somewhat an exaggeration. Holmes fought as perfectly as he ever could against Cobb, however Cobb did land punches. He just never really had any power behind his punches, so they didn't really register with the judges.

Personally I thought Cobb should have won against Ken Norton, but because his punches were feather dusters in comparison to Kenny's the judges were unkind. But rewatch that fight, Cobb landed at least 2-1 over Norton.

As for Holmes vs Cobb, I'd argue a round or two could have been scored evenly, because Cobb did land a decent amount of punches. He just caught so many over the course of the fight, and considering Cosell was whining like a baby about it (this happened not long after the unfortunate Du Koo Kim bout) that it made it seem far worse than what it really was.

Wildly sloppy contest, where most of the public was demanding them to retire. Both men were full blown drug addicts at the time. Still, a great fight.

Thats what you call "A Study in Fatigue".
It would be interesting to know the chronoly on their drug abuse
and how it factored in on their boxing careers.
I wonder when Tex Cobb first tried cocaine ?
When he was in Hollywood filming THE CHAMP in 1979?
after his loss to Ken Norton when Cobb had bet his entire purse on himself ?
I first noticed that he looked kind of "wired up"
when they showed him training at his gym getting ready for his title fight with Larry Holmes.

I'd say following Holmes, when he made a comeback into kickboxing against John Jackson (lost the first one, won the rematch) and from that point on he was mainly in movies and fighting less and less. When he lost to Dee Collier, he definitely was at the height of his drug use. It's the only stoppage loss of his career.

The fight with Dee Collier was 2 and half years before his fight with Leon Spinks.
He should have definetaly retired after this fight with Leon Spinks as he said he was going to do
with the interviewer there at the end.
Instead he came back over 4 years later to fight Sonny Barch
and that is the one that really affect him with the Sports Illustrated article
and then being black-balled from the Film Indisustry.
( his scenes from LIAR LIAR with Jim Carey were cut out the film)

People tend to forget that Cobb (also) managed to become the #1 contender to Tommy Morrison's WBO title during his comeback... But then SI dropped the bombshell about the fight fixes and cocaine use.
