Out of print in the UK as far as I know, so other than a 2nd hand book shop you'd have to order it from the USA - great book :TU:

You may find one at Sportspages on the Charing Cross Rd

They published it back in the '80's under a Sportspages imprint in conjunction with Simon & Schuster ( that's the copy I have )

They also published all Plimpton's sports books too.

Do track it down. One of the truly great Boxing Books

"The Sweet Science"

"Watching a fight on television has always seemed to me a poor substitute for being there. For one thing, you can't tell the fighters what to do. When I watch a fight, I like to study one boxer's problem, solve it, and communicate my solution vocally. On occasion my advice is disregarded, as when I tell a man to stay away from the other fellow's left and he doesn't, but in such cases I assume that he hasn't heard my councel, or that the other fellow has, and has acted on it. Some fighters hear better than others - for example Joe Louis. "Let him have it Joe!" I would yell whenever I saw him fight, and sooner of later he would let the other fellow have it."

I used to have what must have been an incredibly rare book. It was a victorian printing of Ruby Robert Fitzsimmons own health, fitness and self defence guide, with original photographs of the man himself.

I've never seen this book listed anywhere in online searches after many attempts, which leads me to believe it was very rare indeed. I found it in a bookshop in colchester and bought it for 50p, but it got mangled when I moved house. It was in mint condition practically too...

I bet it was worth a small fortune....bummer.

Physical Culture and Self Defense", by World Champion Robert Fitzsimmons, with an introduction by A J Drexel, Biddle London & Addershot, Gale & Polden 1902, Second edition 1907, 185pp, Philadelphia.

I would guess worth c£300 but I may be way off

I see this book crop up for sale every now and again. You should be able to buy a decent first edition copy for around £150.

Still, I'd be pissed off if my copy disappeared in a house move.
