I'm sure this has come up before but I'm new so here goes...
What are some of the best fights that should have happened but didn't? I mean elite fighters who were in the same division ( or close ) at the same time but never met. Some obvious examples are Frazier-Norton and Lewis-Bowe.

Some Others:
Virgil Hill vs. Prince Charles Williams
Meldrick Taylor vs. Pernell Whitaker ( I think they were close enough in weight )

I'm not going to speculate on who would win, I'd just love to see some of these match ups. Any thoughts?

One for me was Trinidad v Quartey at 147, that would have been a cracking fight.

Another beauty would have occurred if Mike McCallum had stepped up to middleweight a little earlier and fought Marvin Hagler.

I have a sneaking suspicion that Benn would have won it.

Slapsie, are you referring to Benn when you mention "Bomber"? I didn't think he was around in Hagler's time. I'm not so sure about Hagler avoiding anybody, it was usually the other way around. He did decline a mandatory defense against Herol Graham to fight Leonard, but we all know he would have destroyed Graham, as well as the host of contenders/champions who came along in 88'-89' ( Tate, Nunn, Olajide, Barkley, Kalambay, etc. ).

I think Hagler would have had all the trouble he could have coped with with Herol. I really don't think he would have destroyed him, with the exception of the Jackson fight, no one did.

Still, a fight I would have loved to have seen

Thanks for clarifying that. Maybe I'm underestimating Graham and giving too much credit to an aging Hagler ( my pick for best middle ever ). As a British fan you obviously saw a lot more of those guys (Graham,Benn,Watson,Eubank) than I did in Canada, where boxing gets less coverage than curling. Tell me if I was dreaming when I saw this, but did Watson knock out Benn with a punch that looked like little more than a jab? This would have occurred around 91'.

By the time Graham was a top contender at Middleweight the great Hagler was slowing down and coming to the end of his glorious career.

The Bombers slick fast, ultra tricky, southpaw style would have given Hagler a nightmare of a fight, but even the 1986/7 version of Hagler would have been too much for the Sheffield stylist.

Watson did finish Benn with a jab.

BUT ( and I called Watson for the fight) it was a brutal 5 rounds before that and Watson fought the perfect fight. The jab did not knock him out, more it was the final straw in a perfect performance

Perhaps the best of a career cut short in what could have been one of the very best

To Benn's credit, he seemed to make a career of getting up off the canvass and find a way to win-just not this time. For those who never saw the fight it wasn't some pawing jab that put him down, it was a hard shot that hit Benn right on the point of the jaw ( if my memory is 15 years accurate ):roll:

your memory does not let you down. it was a good crisp shot. In normal circumstances, it would not have been a knockout blow, but Benn was shattered after his usual whirlwind, all out attack did not work against the skilled Watson.

Of the "big three" of that era, I think Watson was potentially the best. A real class act

benn jones, undoutedley. Roy was young and up coming, Ben had beaten Mclellan in what was his career performance in a fight no one gave him a hope in. I think Nige would have pulled off another upset, personally reckon Jones didnt want to know bout fighting Benn after that performance which was basically bordering on animalistic in its brutality and courage.

one that will go down as one that should have happened is Jones V Toney the rematch and Hatton Witter!

Before he was forced to retire there was talk of Terry Marsh stepping up in weight and taking on Lloyd Honyghan, that could have been an interesting clash.

Was Marsh the firefighter who retired undefeated?

Marsh broke the story of his epilepsy and retirement himself, in The Sun newspaper. His promoter was allegedly furious that he hadn't been told first, and had to read it in the newspapers.
Cue a big falling out, and a courtcase with Marsh lost.

As for Who Shot Warren....I reckon it was Lee Harvey Oswald 8)

Sanchez was on the verge of moving up to 135, for a superfight with Arguello ( Duran had moved to 147 already ) before his tragic car crash.
