One of the most interesting aspects about the history of boxing in the US is the fact it was banned in various places and they passed a law which made it illegal to import film footage of fights. I would be interested to know how this came about and whether there is any easy to read chronicle of this very odd period.

Not sure if this is part of your question or not. I know the government made it illegal to show the fight films of Jack Johnson claiming it incited riots because he was beating up whites. Some states even outlawed interracial fighting. States also claimed boxing was barbaric and would not have bouts in their state. Had to have on barges or in secret.
