It was far from pretty, but Yuriorkis Gamboa overcame two point deductions and a determined Jason Sosa on Saturday night.

The former three-division champion won a majority decision in their 10-round lightweight fight on the Sergey Kovalev-Vyacheslav Shabranskyy undercard in The Theater at Madison Square Garden. Judges Don Trella (96-92) and John McKaie (95-93) scored the highly competitive fight for Gamboa, but judge Robin Taylor had it even (94-94).

Trella only credited Sosa with winning one round, the seventh, in the entire fight. McKaie scored seven rounds for Gamboa and Taylor had him winning six rounds, three fewer than Trella.

Unofficial CompuBox statistics indicated that the fight was very close.

CompuBox counted 132 overall punches that landed for Sosa, just three more than Gamboa landed (129). Sosa connected with more power punches, according to CompuBox (103-96), which gave Gamboa a slight edge in jabs (33-29).

Did anyone score the fight? or even without scoring the fight, have a winner?

Sosa thinks he did enough to beat Gamboa..

"I was a fun fight. I took some breaks but I thought I did enough to win. I know I did enough to win the fight. I didn't get hurt at all during the fight. I spar with middleweights so that was nothing," Sosa said

I scored it.. 96-92 for Sosa! From 6-10, Gamboa didn't win a single round on my card.

I reported last night that I had it 96-92, but I actually had it 95-93 Sosa. I confess that I was distracted from giving the fight the focus that I would normally. Therefore, I can’t claim it to be a robbery. Gamboa certainly received a gift, but the Cuban dominated the first half, imo.

95-93 Sosa sounds right to me. I thought it was pretty much an even fight for the most part, but the knockdown and point deduction should've put it over the top for Sosa.

:TU: Yep. It was easilly a draw or a one point to Gamboza, but the KD and point deduction should have given it to Sosa.
