Mikey Garcia is gunning for a title in a fourth weight class.

The talented boxer-puncher will challenge Sergey Lipinets for his IBF junior welterweight title on February 10 on Showtime, a source told RingTV.com.

Garcia (37-0, 30 KOs), who holds the WBC’s lightweight title, is coming off a July decision victory over Adrien Broner at 140 pounds. That’s where the Oxnard, California native will compete again, and he’ll be a heavy favorite to take the belt off Lipinets.

The former kickboxing champion topped Akihiro Kondo in November to win the vacant belt in a grueling fight, and now he’s sure to earn career-best money against Garcia, THE RING’s No. 6 pound-for-pound fighter.

Lipinets (13-0, 10 KOs) possesses an aggressive style and good power, which should make for an entertaining scrap with Garcia. The Russian, though the titleholder, is ostensibly being brought in as an opponent for Garcia, one of Showtime’s biggest stars.

Garcia is clearly one of the best fighters in the sport. Now, he’ll have the opportunity to accomplish a rare feat: titles in four weight classes.

The fight is expected to take place at The Alamodome in San Antonio. An official announcement is expected Thursday afternoon.

I don't prefer boxers who win 1 title in a weight and move up. win another 1 title and move etc. He's never unified. Still liek him though

He took the fight to escape a fight with Lomachenko at 135... It's pretty obvious because previously he jumped over 135 to 140 when Terence Crawford was at 135... He's avoiding super fights to stay undefeated... That isn't good.

Most significantly, if Rigondeaux goes up 2 weight classes to face Loma, why is 2 divisions too big a jump for Loma? Loma & Garcia are both 5'6" and are much closer in size than Loma & Rigo are!!

Lol didn't take long for Mikey to eff off to 140 after that Loma win. He don't want dat work at 135 lol

loma already moved up. him going to 135 would be 9 pounds where he started from and 140 would be 14. rigo moved 8 pounds where he started from.

Has the smell of Garcia edging away from Loma fight or making it difficult and wanting to fight Loma at higher weight than 135..

What he says about Arum is true. Will Arum want this fight? Before MG took the title shot at 140, Arum said Loma may just skip 135 and go to 140, because of no competition there, and he mentioned MG as one of them that would be no competition.

loma already said he wanted garcia too. on what basis do you say that its down to one guy when they both talk it up as though theyd be down? you did that in another thread yesterday too. said garcia is up for it so if it doesnt happen its down to loma. but loma has said hes up for it too, so you can easily switch it up and say it not happening would be down to garcia.

i dont think either is scared of the other tbh. think theyd both go for it but i worry about bad blood between mikey/haymon and arum, as much as ppl want to think it doesnt matter.

Garcia said in front of Loma on video he is ready now, and Loma and his team just need to let him know when they are, and they can sit down and begin negotiating. Garcia doesn't need permission to negotiate like Loma does.
Arum recently saying Loma would make a joke of Garcia and make him quit doesn't make it sound like he would like to find out, adding these guys are going to want a lot of money. He also mentions 135 or 140, so either weight shouldn't be an issue according to Arum, since Loma is so superior.

He definitely wins this one. Doubtful it boosts his reputation any.

He had a good 2017 though so it's forgivable I suppose. As long as he gets a meaningful fight afterward.

Better than Figueroa.

But all Lipinets has done is beat Japanese guy who isn't world class for a vacant belt. Being a multi weight world champion in this era isn't as good as it used to be. Look at Broner.

I'd rather Mikey clear out a weight class.

All you have to do anymore is be a pretty good boxer, and they'll find Multiple World Titles to hand out to you. Being a 4 weight World Champion at one time in this sport would have been an absolutely astonishing achievement. Now anybody that has the marketing machine behind them can achieve it, even if they're mediocre because they'll just find 3 or 4 guys that suck worse.

And honestly...I'm not sure if Lipinets is better than Figueroa as an opponent for Mikey.
