Anthony Joshua On Why He Never Won The SPOTY

Anthony Joshua believes he didn't finish in the top three at BBC Sports Personality of the Year because of his different TV audience.
Joshua finished fourth in the annual event despite being the favourite to win the vote.
"I didn't even come top three. That's not good enough, I want to win it," Joshua said. "My viewership is completely different -- I'm on Sky.
"I don't do what I do to win Sports Personality. But if I win it one day, that'll be good.
"You have to pull yourself back from wanting to win these things and focus on boxing because I'm an athlete and winning my fights is more important than anything."

There's a lot of talk about BBC bias in these things. Zara Phillips winning it says a lot.
I think regional voting is still a factor. Northern Ireland voting for Rea for example. Joshua and Kane are far more well known but don't make the top three.

guess he's going to have to ratchet the humble up another notch! You know, like by appearing on terrestrial TV for once

A bit like he did when bbc1 showed the story of his fight with Wlad the night before he boxed Takam or ITV showing an hour documentary of him and Bear Gryllls around the same time?

Clearly that’s not enough. Perhaps he’ll be a contestant on the next Strictly

He could go to the jungle next year. Might lose too much weight.
TBH, the Norton show was the only real appearance he made after beating Wlad. His other appearances were strictly on Sky Sports. e.g. that sit down he did with Thierry Henry was only for Sky.
He needs to appear more on BBC/ITV.. There are a lot of shows that many people tune into in the morning.

I mean fighting - none of that other fluff means anything

Well I was obviously joking, but I disagree - being a contestant on Strictly would definitely be a better way to win SPOTY than actually fighting on the BBC.

AJ didn't win a personality award because he has no personality.
Nothing to see here...

Boxers don’t normally win, it’s not a mainstream sport

Just because somebody isn't doing daft stuff all the time doesn't mean they have no personality, some of these guys might be a right laugh away from the crowd.
Besides it isn't about your actual personality it's your sporting achievement and the likes of Mo Farah, Lewis Hamilton, Andy Murray, Chris Hoy etc. are among the best at what they do. Boxers have won it, 5 times in fact tied for 4th with Football with only Tennis, Formula One and Athletics ahead.

Calzaghe won it in 2007 and he’d had the Lacy fight on ITV in the previous year, along with a couple of other fights. So he had been on terrestrial tv relatively recently, although admittedly not when he won it.

I just don’t think boxing is as popular to the general public. It also can’t have helped that he fights on PPV so only really boxing fans will buy the fights.
The Beeb is also more than a tad biased too.

Come to think of it I'm sure several big PPV fights were shown on the BBC at a later date, I know for a fact Calzaghe vs Kessler was replayed on BBC 1 and a few of Lennox Lewis bouts were replayed on BBC as well, as was Hatton vs Mayweather.
