dr_hook posted something I didn't know after the proposed Ricky Hatton-Vivian Harris fight fell through last month. He wrote:

"allegedly is scared he will lose on purse bids to other promoters that will force Hatton to fight in another country. That’s why the WBU title exists. There are no mandatory fights and you can fight any bums. Hatton never defended the British title because when he was the champ Junior Witter was the mandatory fighter for the title. Hatton also never fought for the European title because Warren would of lost the purse to Urkal handlers."

It was a post that got me thinking, especially about the WBU. If there are no mandatory's, then a champion, as dr_hook says, can pick ANYONE in the top 10 or the top 15 every time he fights. That has to be a bit of a scandal.

What an absolute f*****g joke...Amir Khan for goodness sake when you turn professional....CHOOSE WISELY!!!!

So they have to find Hattons opponents (way) outside the top 10

Seeing the WBU ratings they look vary much as the boxrec ratings on "rating day"

That says it all, they don't even have their champ at #1.

Also why is mayweather above Hatton in the rankings? surely their champ should be number 1

We at the WBU have implemented a computerised Ratings Guide, a fighter’s position within this system is based solely upon the individual’s record and ability. The only way for any fighter to improve his position is to defeat an opponent above him. Therefore, no fighter can be moved up the rankings or into the ‘top ten’ by any means other than his own achievements in the ring. This is the only criteria by which a fighter can be granted a world title challenge."

This computerised ratings system they boast about is a bit of a mystery. Nothing but top 10 listings on the site. Have just emailed them enquiring as to where Mike Stewart is ranked with them...
