Roy Jones: Very Possible Tarver Was on Steroids With Me

An article from 2012 I found interesting..
--------------------------------
Former four division champion Roy Jones Jr. is wondering whether or not Antonio Tarver was on steroids in their 2004 rematch - where Tarver, on a single punch, stopped Jones in the second round and Roy was never the same boxer after that contest. On June 22, BS.com's Ryan Maquinana broke the news that Tarver tested positive for drostanolone, an anabolic steroid. The failed test took place prior to Tarver's twelve round draw against Lateef Kayode on June 2 in California. Jones says it is "very possible" that Tarver was using steroids for their fight.
Since the positive test result, several of Tarver's past opponents like Danny Green and Clinton Woods have been come in the press with similar questions.
"You can call it a lucky punch but he did have to throw it. You can call it lucky or unlucky. The only problem I got is now that he's tested positive for steroids, it's very possible that he was on steroids when it happened. Other than that, it was a good punch, a clean punch - so I just can't go off that it was a lucky punch. But if he was on steroids, then it makes me understand on how he was able to stand there and why he was so confident to throw it, because he knows he's on steroids. Other than that, I don't complain about a lucky punch because lucky punches happen," Jones said.

There are no lucky punches.
If you throw a punch, you usually intend for it to hit its target.
Jones got hit with a real punch.
Apparently he got hit with several of those lucky punches in the years since the Tarver fight.

I have never really watched Tarver's fights. Did he have that good of power in his hands, or was Jones' chin just not good?

Sometimes Tarver appeared to be a legit KO puncher. Other times his power seemed little more than ordinary.
He has 22 KOs in 31 wins so he does have a punch. But it usually didn't surface against higher caliber fighters.
I think that Jones chin was probably always a bit on the weak side.
But when he was young and had that fantastic speed and reflexes he was able to disguise just how brittle his chin was.
Once he slowed down, he became much easier to hit and his questionable chin was exposed.

Even when he was at his peak, RJJ was knocked down by another southpaw Lou Del Valle who was never known as being a big puncher.

Looks like he slipped to the floor. Got hit clean though...

Also a headbut at the end of the punches. Looked slightly hurt but not wobbly.

Del Valle's head hit Jones shoulder, not his chin. You can watch it in the slow motion on the 1:15 mark of this video
