..... No not in British amateur boxing terms, but in the chase to win the Newcomer (young) award at this years BBC sports review of the year.

I have to say, as much as I like Amir - given this lads past and his achievements now, he is an equally deserving winner.

Give the prize to both is what I say.

first off Khan is an equally good junior...he won best boxer and gold at lightweight

and won a silver at the olympics...which happens once every 4 years...a grand slam is 4 times a year...and of course Khan was competing against Seniors....and gave the best in the sport a run for his money.

no comparison...but well done to Murray!

I'd love to see Khan win the award, but i think that if Kelly Holmes wins the main award (as i think she should), then Rooney will probably beat Khan to it.

I don't think rooney will win it because of the hooker stories, although this has nothing to do with sporting achievement i think somewhere it will be a deciding factor in him not winning it

Ronney won it last year. khan should win it. that kid won it in the juniors. Khan beat people in the seniors. thats like the tennis kid getting to the final losing to roger feddera.

give it to the Tennis player. it may well be a gay sport, but the guys scottish. and for that reason alone he should win!!

no its not. khan would have to lose to guys like Coralles, Freitas or Casamayor to make that anology stand up, as opposed to a senior amateur

I have read your posts and while you make your points well, I'm still not sure.

Khan is Britains youngest ever medalist, but on the other side Murray is the first ever British winner of the boys US open (or any Slam since 1993). What happens if he does good things in the Davis Cup match which he is selected to play (against seniors). That will be on national television and might get exposure.

He also has the story of dunblaine, which given the recent news headlines I'm sure the BBC will lap up.

And as cruel as this may sound, Murray story end on a high, wheras Khan didn't (I'm talking from the BBC's point of view who know nothing about the sport). Also, whilst you make perfect sense about Khan being a junior, will the selectors consider this such a big achievement. Most lay people (and I'm sure the selectors) consider Amateur boxing "inferior" and a stepping stone to the pro ranks in much the same way these boys tournaments are a stepping stone to the ATP tour. Murray won his major stepping stone title, Khan didn't.

I would love it if Khan won it, but looking at it from a selector point of view who might not give amateur boxing the respect it deserves, I know longer see it as a one horse race.

Forget Rooney, he won it last year.

Its easier in Tennis as a junior than it is in Boxing. Look at Boris Becker and other famous Tennis players winning grand slams at a very young age. Benitez was an exception for Boxing. Khan was also the only member on the team and was watched by millions.

ah but the is the Icon of multiculturalism thing with Kahn, I know that the are a lot of people who are trying to use that one at high level of anti racist preassur groups. And he has another advantege in that he is not scottish .

To me the Olympics have more prestege than a juniour tornament no matter what your sport, that fact is he was young and at the olympics (giving them a chance to show highlights) and he was one of the few people in the olympics who compeeted in a real sport (modern Pentatholon give me a break).

Boris Becker and...... Not that many teenage winners of senior male tennis.

Andre Agassi was as a teenager the "Wayne Rooney" of tennis, yet he was 23 when he won Wimbledon.

Much of the reasoning why so little teenagers win proffesional titles in boxing is due to the fact that most are in the amateurs. But there are a host of boxers 21 and under who have won a proffesional world title.

Of the top of my head, I would say the number of teenage winners in both sports are similar.

All you alot need to vote for khan, dont sit on your arse dial or txt that number.

guys guys, Khan will win this award come on look at the coverage he got, even people who arent into boxing were sat in the office waiting for him to come on, they watched Khan live, lived it with him.

This tennis chap while he has done very well has retrospective coverage how many people watched his victory? None I suspect Im not even sure it was televised.

its the YOUNG sportsperson of the year, but I agree if Kelly doesnt win the main award then its a scandal.

Matthew Pinsent might have an argument, but it should be Kelly.

Real Deal, I don't think you can vote for this young person award, I think like the team of the year it will is the Beeb that pick it.

I think of she does well at this years paralympic games then it should go to someone like Tanni Grey-Thompson. so far, since 1988, she has won nine golds, four silver and one bronze medal in wheelchair racing in the paralympic games. imagine a British able bodied athlete with that kind of record, they would be a god!

i think its fuckin criminal how the disabled sports are largely ignored in comparison to their able bodied counterparts
