Odd one, might have been decent, certainly he was very prominent, however his record seems almost totally lost.

Not on any of his records, but this says he fought Australian Billy McCarthy for the World Middlewieght Championship, which is interesting with him otherwise being listed only as a heavyweight

He fought (and lost to) Peter Jackson and Gus Ruhlin.

If anyone is up for some digging, this could be an interesting person to look into.

Interestingly the Police Gazzette sporting annual lists the largest stake ever fought for as being Jack Couper Vs Woolf Bendoff

The 1896 version says the stake was $4,500
The 1899 version says the stake was $4,500
The 1900 version says the stake was $22,500
The 1906 version says the stake was $22,500

Weird.

The American Sporting Manuel also lists this in multiple versions, all I've seen say $4,500 though.
I also see Championship records lists it as $22,500

I remember a Guinness World Record Book, 1971 to 73 version, I forget the exact year that somebody sent me... They had Wolf Bendoff and and Jack Cooper fighting for a record prize of I don't remember how many thousand, possibly 22.

I can't remember exactly, but I believe they were fighting on the deck of a docked ship to avoid local law enforcement... It was pretty common in those days for prize fighters to be arrested in violation of local anti-prize fighting laws which were designed to help keep out gamblers, roughnecks, con artists, and other "undesirables."

It did take until the 26 or 27th round. I read about the Bendoff was outboxing him early on, but couldn't make a dent. Couper has a lot of KO wins against bigger guys.

This mentions his bareknuckle victory over Jem Griffiths
Also says some fights such as Jack White (a liverpool heavyweight) in 11 rounds with small gloves
Says he beat Jem Young in 6 rounds with bareknuckles
Then says he went to America
Says he beat Harry Langham in 3 rounds with small gloves
Says he beat Mickey Dwyer in 6 rounds who it calls a middleweight champion (possibly middleweight champion of Massachusetts, but I wouldn't read it as that).
Say he fought a 6 round draw with Jerry Murphy (it calls the heavyweight champion of Maine)
He then went back to England
Claims he beat Jack Knifton in 1 hour and 20m, and gave away 3st
Then says he was beaten 4 weeks after by Jem Smith in 1h and 20m
Then traveled with Jem Mace for 6 months

Siome of this is on Cyberboxingzone, and some of the details are different. Like CBZ says, the old reports are often contradictory, so I'm not saying who's right, I'd probably trust them over a newspaper rundown overall.

Fighting some exhibtions (I think) in the 1890s. Meant to have outclassed who he fought including the local amateur champ.

Also found this which describes his fight with "Jim Smith" (presumably Jem Smith)

A later article (1911) describes him as being found guilty of illegal pawning, and he was treated as a first offender. Giving this and the times of some of his fights, I'm guessing he was actually found guilty and sent to jail as reported.

A much later article (1940) describes Woolf as a mediocre performer who spent the greater part of his career on his back.
